Tytronic ignition

Post by warhead_71 »

I just ordered a Tytronic ignition (ver. 3) for my 78. I'll report back after I get it installed. Positive reviews on them at Hondatwins.net and sohc4.net, despite the typical unsubstantiated "don't buy Chinese" warnings. Appears to be the exact same unit as the "Charlie's Place" pickups, at 1/3 the price.

This might not be a Chinese product. Tytronics is an Australian company that makes gas ignition systems. It's not a far stretch for this company to make engine ignition systems as well. I use a RaeSan igntion, from Australia, on my CX500-based police trike. The guy who runs RaeSan might have some connection with Tytronics.

I've got a Tytronic on my wife's 71 cb350 twin, it's only been on it for a year now so I can't give any long term opinion on it but the bike does run fine ........ but it ran fine with points as well so there was no dramatic improvement when I switched to the Tytronic. Now before anyone questions why would I switch if it ran fine with points, I did it because I's always curious about new products and the cost was cheap compared to other electronic ignitions for the cb350 twin, it's cost though did raise a red flag in regards to it's quality so i knew i was roiling the dice as far as getting what I paid for BUT so far so good.

I started to install this over the weekend. Looks like it's not quite "plug-n-play". I need to make a jumper wire from the coils to the new unit. And I'm not quite sure what to do with the condensors... I shouldn't need them now that the points are gone, right? Do I simply unplug them? Do I still need the resistor on the coils? The instructions are horrible.

Warhead - my understanding is that the Tytronic ignitions are similar to the Dyna S units and are installed the same way, so the power to the unit doesn't necessarily have to come from the coils, it just needs to be 12V switched. If you are using the stock coils you should likely retain the resistor. Condensors can be disconnected.

Thanks low-side. Next question... where is a smart place to run to 12V switched? I've read a little about running a relay instead of straight from the switch. Is that the way to go?

The auxiliary power port under the left shelter cover should work as a power supply - I'd just check to make sure that there isn't a big voltage drop between the battery and the port. I run relays on all my old bikes' ignition systems.

I always just tie in to the hot wire for the coils. Surprised more people don't think of that. ;)

If you use the coil feed as a power source and still maintain the original in line resistor isn't your voltage to the unit reduced?

You connect it on the other side of the resistor so that it gets full voltage any time the ignition circuit is live (at least that's what I did with the Dyna S on mine). That way the power to the electronics is disconnected if you turn the kill switch to Off. That is useful if you are working on some thing else electrical and need the key turned on with the engine off because 1) It won't drain the battery as fast and 2) it eliminates the chance of overheating the electronic ignition parts by running current through them constantly.

On my bikes, I use the kill switch lead to switch the relay and then the lead from the relay feeds both the coils and the Dyna unit.
