GL1200: Do I need to connect 4th gear and overdrive signal to Ignition?

#1

Post by SWEDISHWULF »

Hi, I tried to search and Google it but could not find anything.

Sorry for my bad english.

I am building a streetscrambler from a Gl1200 Interstate 85 and I want to reduce/simplefy the electrics and the 4:h gear and OD is connected to the Ignition, I assume it has to do with timing advancment? I wont have any lights that indicate OD and I cant just short it out. What to do?

Best regards Patrik from Sweden.

The gear selector light on the 1200 is controlled by a switch under the front cover. Same switch that shows the neutral light. Has no effect on ignition timing

That do I need to do with the two cables from gear select sensor into Ignition control module?

I could be wrong, because it has happened before-lol- but I believe timing is advanced more in fourth and fifth gear. There are the wires which feed info as well as a vacuum signal. You could ride without it and probably not notice. With it intact you probably get a few for mpg .

Looks like you are correct. As you say might be a MPG issue, and that makes sense to me. But I don't really worry about MPG , so I don't have a reference. That being said, I have a C5 system on my 78 and I control the Ign curve, four choices, which are not really to much difference between them, but is helpful when using the nitros, or steep hills.

The module is so small that I would keep it intact and leave it in the circuit along with the vacuum hoses. If you don't have the OD lights that won't be an issue, yet removing the circuit completely may cause more issues than just gas mileage.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Will keep it, I just lost it then I read the schematic, did not realize that the cables just shorts to ground then you shift to 4 and 5.

Is it very well or vary well?
Yeah but I have to give it to Honda, their FSM was written fairly well.
