Right mirror repair

#1

Post by SnoBrdr »

The right mirror holder is stripped out and since it's part of the M/C it can't easily be swapped out like the left side.

Is a tap the best way to repair it and if so what sized tap?

A helicoil or timesert would be the best way to repair it.

Is there a helicoil that fits the OEM mirror screw that you are aware of?

You can get a helicoil in almost any size. Take your mirror off then take it to Lowe's or another hardware store and find out the thread and pitch of the mirror screw. Once you find that out you should be able to find a helicoil to fit.

Didn't think of that, thanks.

Believe it's a M10x1.25 right hand which is in between the common M10x1 and M10x1.5

Might need to check with NAPA or ?

Any idea if you can buy just a single insert?

All I've seen so far is a 12 pack for like $48.

Does Harbor Freight carry helicoils? Just asking as I don't know.

You need the tool, and the proper tap, and a drill bit.
all part of the kit

I have an old tap set, thought that would do it but I need to read up on the Helicoil.

Helicoils are great. In this instance though, the cost might be a bit prohibitive (for just one thread). I think I would try some other things first. If the threads aren't too bad, Plumber's teflon tape might work. Napa has a kit for repairing stripped crankcase threads (on cars). I used this once on a stripped crankcase thread and it did work. It's some goop you put in the stripped hole, thread in the male part, let it cure and you've got threads. Not perfect but worth a try.

I tried the repair kit but it just didn't hold up over time.

Maybe the constant vibrations did it in.

Well maybe it's time to bite the bullet and pick up a helicoil kit then.
