Yikes! What have I myself gotten into.
HellO All.
I joined the forum in May asking about a cafe racer project I was thinking about starting in on,,, had a setback or two over the summer that put things off,,, and I am just getting back into the swing of things.
I am a NOVICE in the truest sense with goldwings and motorcycles,,, so I am really really hoping people will help walk me thru some of the most elemental things until I can get my bearings and more familiar with the goldwing systems and the directions I am going to need to go. I am mechanically inclined, currently restoring a 1986 Porsche 928, a 1990 Jaguar XJS V-12 Convertible and my daily driver is an older Jaguar XK8 that I brought back to life. BUT,,, I know the Goldwing is a whole nuther animal and I will be needing you allz help here.
My neighbor sold (basically gave) me a 1986 Honda Goldwing Aspencade with 12,500 miles on it. It starts right up and runs pretty smoothly. Coughs and hesitates quite a bit when I give her throttle... Still, she is surprisingly clean. I want to craft, shape, convert and mold it into a cafe racer of my very own.
I dove in today. I have a new battery coming. The old battery will not hold a charge BUT it will start with one of those mobile jumpers. That was, until I started pealing of fairings. Basically I removed the entire front faring. Before I removed it she would run after I jumped her WITHOUT the cables attached, and after, she would only run IF I left the jumper cables attached. If I removed the jumpers after removing the fairing she dies right away.
As you can see from the photos (sorry they are sideways) when all was said and done removing the front fairing, I ended up with 4 plugs that did not have a home. When sitting on the bike they are on the left hand side. 3 of them, the white plastic, seemed to be involved in radio controls,,, maybe??? And that one 4 port brown connector I cannot find a place for.
What would be the cause in change after removing the fairing? Are any of these plugs the return to the battery from the alternator?
1. THE THREE WHITE PLUGS IN MY HAND PLUG INTO THE FAIRING IN THE PHOTO.
2. THAT BROWN 4 POINT PLUG IS THE ONLY PLUG THAT WAS LEFT OVER AFTER REMOVING THE FAIRING. I CANNOT FIND ITS OTHER HALF EITHER ON THE FAIRING OR ANYWHERE ON THE BIKE.
ALL of these photos are on the left hand side of the bike when sitting on it.
HUGE appreciation in advance for sharing you alls wisdom and experience! I KNOW doesn't come cheap or without hard work... Thank you

hard to say for sure from the photo, but the connector with the three yellow wires, the one by your first finger, may connect to the regulator, {coming from the Alternator]. That would explain the not continuing to run when the jumper is off

Re: Yikes! What have I myself gotten into.
My 1200 Aspencade has been gone for a while, so I'm a little foggy on details under the plastic even though I had her clothes off a few times.
I'd strongly recommend either finding a hardcopy shop manual (Clymer/Haynes/Honda) of your choice - or downloading a pdf version. Lots of critical info in them. While questions can often be answered by someone who may have "been in" recently, sometimes even longtime GL owners forget details and have to refer to the published material.
Try ebay for purchasing hardcopies or...

Seconded! You are a very brave man to have started without one.CYBORG wrote:I agree. Don't start anything with out a manual

Re: Yikes! What have I myself gotten into.
The connectors to the fairing are for whatever electrical parts are in the fairing: instruments, lights, and audio if present. An Interstate has analog instruments and only 2 connectors. Aspencades had a digital dash, plus air suspension controls, plus radio or intercom controls that run to the rear, so they needed a third. My FSM shows a 4-pin brown connector for the optional CB radio, so that's four.
Power from the alternator does not extend to the fairing. You need to get the good battery in, make sure the connections are clean, and see what it does. There should be nothing in the fairing that causes it not to run, if removed.
There is no substitute for the original Honda GL1200 manual, no matter how much you have to pay. The wiring for these bikes can be twice as complex as earlier ones. Mine has 13 different diagrams for all the various models between 84 and 87, and the Aspencades have a main drawing and a sub-drawing. The link Old Fogey provided is good as far as it goes, but there are no 1200 diagrams.

If you can do an old XK8, a Goldwing should be easy. Nothing like the tensioner assemblies you've already done.... (just did my own 2000 XJ8L.....)
Get at least one manual. I have both the factory one and a Haynes for my 1100. Indispensible.....

My thread "All it needs is a battery and maybe a carb clean" details my adventure with an 85 1200 Interstate, it may help you with some issues and certainly show you are not alone in the confusion of stripping down one of these bikes.

No, don't think anything bad of my comment. It's always good to remind everyone that there is something out there, even if it doesn't match what the OP had.Old Fogey wrote:My bad, SORRY.

It has the drawing for the GL1200 standard. Post #25 will give you an idea of the complexity of the other 1200 models.Shadowjack wrote:The link Old Fogey provided is good as far as it goes, but there are no 1200 diagrams.
