75 Wing fuel problem

#1

Post by rrgrassi »

Hello!

Does anyone know what the PSI rating of the mechanical fuel pump on the GL1000 is?

I can only find fuel pumps at the dealer. They want way too much for springs and diaphragms.

I found a solid state electric fuel pump rated at 2-4 PSI that is specifically for carb engines. Only problem is that is it for the VW bugs made prior to 1977. It's half the price of the dealership OEM part.

Thanks!

PSI should be at 500 rpm: 2.4 psi, 900 rpm 2.3 psi and
5000 rpm: 2.0 psi.
You can also check the flow rate of the fuel pump.
The pump should supply 0.45 litres/15FL.oz per minute
at 3000 rpm.

Thanks for the info, Try! I do not know if it is a good idea to put an electric pump on or not, since the electric is a constant pressure, and the mechanical varies with RPM. What do you guys think? I have some HD friends saying keep the bike OEM, and others saying, it should work, but constant pressure can starve the carbs during highway running.

Thanks for all the help!

fuel pump

the ele. fuel pump should supply enough fuel at top rpm. the pressure can be lowered by using a fuel pressure regulator between the pump and carbs.
you can get one from summit racing or holly mfg made for cars and it is ajustable from top pump pressure to 1/2 psi.
i would keep the old pump in place to block off hole in the block and in case the ele. pump gives you a problem
be sure to wire it to an ignition hot wire that goes off with the key.

good luck and keep us posted............T.

I went OEM on the pump just to be safe. I'll disassemble the old one and see if I can do a rebuild with parts available on the market today, and post my findings. It kinda hacks me off that a fuel mechanical fuel pump no bigger that your fist, costs $80. The pump should be in my hot little hands Friday. I have lots of people that ride here at work. They do not care what you ride, and thay are always willing to help, just like everyone in this forum.

Thanks again!
