Problem ignition switch ....

#1

Post by Rat »

Well .... out doing errands today and the bike (82 1100i) died at a stoplight, power just went off .... wiggled the key and it started up .... ran fine and started normally for two more stop/starts .... stopped again, off for maybe 15 minutes and then the key would not turn it on .... switch turned normally but the power didn’t come on .... much wiggling and cursing would not bring it to life .... gotta think the ignition switch is the problem .... bike is a fair way from home .... any suggestions as to how to start it without an ignition switch ??

If the fairing is still on, it’s a pain. I think you can reach it from below. But two wires jumped will get you running, three will make you legal with lights. I have three male connectors looped together for emergency use.

Haven’t use it on 1100, but 1000 and 1200 hybrid.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Had the same situation with my ‘77 GL1000. Found if I pulled the ignition switch wiring harness towards the triple tree; it would start and run. Ended up using some nylon ties to keep the harness in place. Got me home (about 100 miles). Ended up the contacts on the switch had loosened over time.

Hard to get to but check that the big connector on the base of the switch has not come loose. Had one I had to zip tie into place as the bike would die when I turned the handle bars.

The switch failures I have seen have usually given quite a bit of notice before giving out completely. I would suspect something else.

This one has been flakey for a while .... I have had to wiggle the key often, but until yesterday it worked

Thanks for the suggestions .... I’ll take a long extension and try to get at it with the fairing on

When you get it home, they do make switch blocks to snap on the bottom of the key cylinder so you can use the original key. The block on my 750 is flaky and doesn't attach firmly to the bottom of the cylinder causing it to fail at times. I'll probably replaces the block on it soon.

Similar situation this past summer however no warning signs at all, just no power after parked for a couple of hours.
Didn't spend much time trying to figure it out in the parking lot.
Rat, CAA is you friend.
A ride home, 15min in the shop had it running without the key switch.
Replacement was available through Randakk.
Unfortunately have to use different keys for ignition and top lid lock.

Yessir CAA picked it up and took it to a little shop I use sometimes when I’m too lazy or too cold to work in the driveway ....
