Good news about the engine freeing up. Have you tried to put electrical power to it yet? Check the lights, try the starter and see if it has spark? Change the oil and filter and a squirt of starter fluid? You may get a new year's surprise to go with Christmas.

I'm not to that point yet. I spent last week going through the brakes (rebuilt calipers and master cylinders), and general clean up. This weekend I removed the fuel tank and carburetors. I've been cleaning carburetors all day today, soaking them in an ultrasonic cleaner filled with warm acetone. The carburetors are cleaning up nicely, and the acetone cuts the old gasoline varnish pretty quickly. The floats and needles are moving again.

This week I'm planning on cleaning out the tank with muratic acid and putting the carburetors back together. Once the fuel system is clean, I can start putting the bike back together.

Hopefully I will get to the point of hooking up a battery mid-January.

Dale, consider oiling the carburetor throttle shaft seals after cleaning. The cleaning solution along with them being old will dry them out. This can be a source of idling problems. The seals are made of felt and are oiled in the factory. I use Liquid Wrench White Lithium aerosol while putting a vacuum on the carb body. After the carb is assembled and before attaching to the plenum. Duct tape the small end of the carb to a shop vacuum, turn it on, put your hand over the other end of the carburetor venturi and them spray the throttle shaft area when it goes through the seal.

Thanks for the tip! Excellent technique to make sure the lubricant gets to the felt.

It runs!

After spending the last couple weeks removing/cleaning/rebuilding components, I finally got everything back together yesterday. Today I installed a new battery and put a couple gallons of gasoline in the tank.

I cranked the motor in short bursts, but couldn't get it to fire. Checked for spark. No joy. I found a pinched wire inside the points cover, cleaned the points, and tried again. Still no run. I sprayed a little starting fluid into the air cleaner and it fired a few times. Tried it again and it took off, as long as I held the throttle partly open.

It smoked quite a bit at first, but eventually it cleared up. I imagine it was burning off all of the PB Blaster and ATF that I used to soak the cylinders loose. I adjusted the idle speed a little faster and let it run until it got up to operating temperature. It sounds pretty good! The alternator is charging. All the lights now work. The tachometer seems a bit slow, but does work.

If there wasn't 4 inches of snow in the driveway I would have taken it for a spin . . . . .

Still, all-in-all it was a good day.
