COIL selection

I looked at the guru corner, typed in the search engine did not see this topic. i am looking for new coils for the 1978 gl 1000. i see 2 options 3 and 5 ohms. how do i know the correct one to purchase? looked at the Randak page no luck yet.

I've had two 78's with the 3 ohm dyna green coils.

one with resistor - points
one without resistor - dyna

on my78 I have used 1200 coils. Dyna coils and ign. Both O.K. Now I run the C5 system, which comes with special coils, and it performs better then eather of the others. Had this bike since it was 1 year old, and now runs the best it has ever run

If you stick with the ballast resistor setup you need 3 ohm coils. If you put a jumper across the ballast you can use 5 ohm. If you buy Dynatech coils, you could probably go 5 ohm and eliminate the resistor. They're much better coils than the original OEMs and should need no boost at start.
Strictly my opinion though.

I switched to GL1500 coils a couple of years ago and they work just fine without ballast resistors. You can see what I did here https://www.ngwclub.com/forum/viewtopic ... ls#p732354
My bike is an '83 (at the time it had a 1000 engine, now it has an 1100 but still with the same Dyna S and 1500 coils) so I used the 1100 coil brackets, which means it is slightly different from what you would need to do on a 1000 but at least one of the threads about similar conversions that I linked in that one have pics of how to do it in a 1000.

Good info but he's talking about resistance in the high tension side for noise suppression not the resistance of the primary (low voltage) side of the coil and the need for a ballast resistor.
