When To Change Belts
The button said "Post A New Topic". I doubt that this topic is very new.
I've got a '78 GL. I installed new belts and rode for 4 seasons (42,000 kms,) I don't really have any intention to replace the belts at this time, but I'm curious to know the frequency everyone opts to apply to belt changes. If I get enough resposes, I'll average it all out, and maybe that will give me a bit of a guideline. Mainly I'm just curious.
Any comments would be welcome........... ...Dave

If you can't remember when you changed the belts, its time to change them!

I mean.... I'm 5 years into new belts on both my 'Wings and I'm not feeling the itch to replace them. 10 years, maybe (but I'm totally spitballing that number, if I'm honest).

To me a belt is kinda like a light bulb, it could blow as soon as you use it the 1st time.Lucien Harpress wrote:I mean.... I'm 5 years into new belts on both my 'Wings and I'm not feeling the itch to replace them. 10 years, maybe (but I'm totally spitballing that number, if I'm honest).
If you worry about it all the time, within reason, you will never ride the bike.

Re: When To Change Belts
I know Randakk recommends 25,000 miles. 42,000 k is 26,000 miles according to my calculations.
For me it seems like I almost always have a reason to be working in that area every couple yeas so I change them out, usually early. On a bike that is ridden regularly I worry more about the pulleys having a bearing issue causing a belt failure. So I check those every couple or 3 years for sure. If a bike has sat more than say 6 months then I would definitely change them.

Re: When To Change Belts
I just replaced them on my 81 after 4 seasons and about 13k miles. I did the pulley upgrade to the Beck Arnley idlers 5 years ago when I first went through it, so I don't worry about those.
As for the belts, they're cheap and a new engine isn't......
My belts looked fine, and in fact you could still read the Gates label on them, but it's cheap insurance. Stuff happens..

That sounds to me like you believe the age, and potential for some form of bio-degration is the relevant factor, and not necessarily the mileage factor.
Cyborg,
I don't know. I don't have a service manual with that information. What manual has that information, and what does it say?

Re: When To Change Belts
Problem is the maintenance schedule is silent on the timing belts. At least the one for the 1100s.
