Is this as nasty as I think it is?

 Embarrassing but a learning moment I think... Symptoms of fuel delivery issues led me to the decision to replace my fuel filter today (randakk’s filter and new lines seem to have done the trick for the moment) Morbid curiosity got the best of me and I cut the old one apart... see for yourself.

The filter component fell out into my hand so was def not hanging on by much of that oe glue. Looks like I’m headed for another carb cleaning next...

Filter is 3 or 4 years old. Tank is in surprisingly good shape. Nothing real bad upstream far as I can see (had a look inside last year). Since I’ve had the bike (2013), I’ve never used any additives and run 89 non-ethenol as standard. Occasionally filled it with regular unleaded when I didn’t have the choice.

There was an issue with filters a few years ago. The fuel was eating the glue that held the element in position. That is what they would look like after it happened.

Why if the bike is running well now. Maybe pull all the drain screws out and drain the bowls to see what comes out of there. Kind of hard to get anything under them to really to catch the gas, so I usually just bunch up a wad of blue shop paper towels to catch the gas. Less contortionist than trying to fit things under there and you will catch any debris in the towels to see what is coming out of the bowls.

Interesting.... I just put Randakk’s high performance filter on there with great enthusiasm. Did I make a poor choice?

No those are good. the Older plastic ones like in your picture were problematic. The new one with the metal based filter element are good.

Yeah, I use aftermarket filters on everyone's bike.

I do like to use a clear filter so you can keep an eye on it.

I use glass filters with replaceable elements. Easy to see when they get dirty, and verify the fuel is getting to the carbs, if needed

Good stuff to know... next time. Been so pleased with Randakk stuff before, I didn’t do much shopping, just grabbed his. I’ll certainly be making it a yearly habit to check up on the filter element though!
