Gl1000 - market survey

#1

Post by kenai »

Hi all - one thing I do is kept an eye on the used GL1000 market around Phoenix during the winter. this year there are plenty of early bikes 3 - 76 and one 77 that are just not moving. The bikes range from "don't knows/don't run" to moderately restored to lo mileage and very very well done bikes. Couple years ago these would have flown off the shelf. Parts bikes have dried up and sweet restored machines are creeping out of the garages. Revenge of demographics??? The take on Barrett Jackson was " old guys selling old cars to other old guys" Well good news the 4 GLs piled up for sale doesn't compare to the 4 pages of Harleys for sale!! How's the market in your area? ..kenai

There's a '75 for sale here on Craigslist. It's been there for many months. It's not a complete bike and the stuff that's there looks pretty nasty. Originally he wanted $500. I offered him $200 if the engine turned. Told him I only wanted the engine. He said 'no thanks'. After it sat for many months I reiterated my offer. 'No thanks'. I rechecked a while back and the same bike was $600. Whaaaa? Now it's $900!
Might have to do with dope legalization here eh?

It is a very soft market. Last couple years things have been sad. But on the bright side there are some killer deals out there for those on the buying side. I got 2 95% complete GL1000's plus parts and a titled frame last summer for 500. Then I got the 08 1800 for a touch over 7 grand.

If you do a google of Motorcycle sales the reports are all doom and gloom for the industry. Not enough new riders coming onto the scene. When I was a kid out of say 20 houses on my street I think at least 6 had bikes of some kind. The street I live on now has about 30 houses and 2 bike riders. The street I grew up on has zero.

Fuel economy used to be a big driver for some commuters but now some cars are doing better than many bikes. And society has changed. Young Folks have different interests than we did back in the day.

Rarely ever see a bike out here anymore, gone are the huge summer packs of harley riders heading somewhere and to see a wing is a rare treat.

Dang Wingnut. What a downer. Makes me want to stop streaming, break out the vinyl, scrutinize the cover art and drown my troubles in some early British Blues.

The prices for 40 year old bikes took a big upswing ~5-7 years ago. Perhaps the demand is dropping because those of us of retirement age that wanted to get back into biking and restoration have done so and the demand for bikes/parts has dropped. I also think todays "kids" have been greatly sissified over the last 3 generations. Stick shift cars are a rarity now and most kids don't know what way to tighten a bolt. God forbid they try and learn to use two hands and two feet to ride a bike. To me it seems the kids biggest challenge today is to see how many selfies they can post while they tap away on their cell phones with their atrophied limbs. I call them the gimmidat generation.

I think when I expire, my final wish will be for me to be freeze dried in a riding position and encased in clear epoxy resin atop my bike. I can blissfully ride into eternity with a smile on my face.

There is an 81 GL1100 here that has been nakedized. 79k on the odo, running on three cylinders, has a custom seat, gas shocks and a few other bobber-to-be goodies. Comes with a pile of Vetters and other assorted makes of fairings and bags. I was considering it before I found the 76's up in Albuquerque. There's also several newer Wings listed but nothing compared to the Harleys for sale. They're like Jeeps, ubiquitous.

You almost never see a GL for sale here in the RI area.

There is on GL1000 listed on CL here: https://hartford.craigslist.org/mcy/d/1 ... 90305.html After you see the bike and the price, you will understand what I mean.

If you do, they want a fortune for it or it's a total POS with most parts missing.

What killed the market here was that about 10 years ago, a guy started buying up every older bike he could, all but Harleys.

He then stripped the bikes, sold what he could on EBay and junked the rest.

He disappeared a few years ago, dunno if he died or just6 ran outa donors.

Around here insurance coverage is part of the problem. Several of the big players in bike insurance won't write new policies on bikes over a certain age and nobody wants a bike they can't get insurance on.

Can you get Hagerty insurance in Canada? It's by far the lowest cost classic bike insurance down here.
