'76 GL1000 front hub/rotor question

#1

Post by pjlogue »

I'm in the process of putting dual piston brakes on my 76 GL1000. I got the pistons/hangers from a 82 CB900F and forks from a 78 GL1000. I went to install everything this last weekend and found I didn't have enough clearance between the left fork lower and the disc. ~3mm clearance is needed on the left. The right side needs about 1 mm clearance. The caliper hanger will not fit between the fork lower and the disc. I thought it odd that the sides were not symmetrical.

My question is: Is there an asymmetrical aspect to the front hub that has the left brake rotor farther out from center? My fix will be getting a set of rotors and milling off the needed amount from the rotor hub where it sits against the wheel hub. Depending on how much material I think is OK to remove I may do 2mm and then take 1mm of the mounting face on the fork lower so the caliper hanger sits outboard a bit. I thought about milling the wheel hub but that would entail braking down the wheel which is a lot more work.

Has anyone done this before and found a work around for the clearance issue?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

IIRC, Greg foressi had a pretty long thread concerning mixing forks, wheels, and brakes... I don't recall his specific solution, though.

Here's his thread. I think your issue may be mixing the spoked wheels with the '78 forks...

Thanks!
"Width across the 77 front hub and rotors is 1/4" more than the the Comstar and rotors. You will need to shim the brackets out by 1/8" / 3mm a side."

That explains it. I have a 2nd set of rotors in nice shape. I can get the clearance by milling down the rotor hub by 3mm.

Thanks!

Or you could find some nice 1/8" thick washers and put them between the brackets and the forks...
