GL1100 Electronic Ignition

#1

Post by maury »

To this point I've done 2 ground up rebuilds on a '75 and '76.
Partly into this '83 I discover the "points" are not on the end of the cam shaft and at the back of the engine.
Then I read they're electronic.
My question is then.........do they need setting/adjusting?
If so how?

Yeah I'll get the factory manual.........but more fun to ask for now

Supposedly yes . They have some kind of expoxy to keep them set. I think the service manual might be wrong on the setting . I opened mine up on the 83 when I had the engine out. After that it started knocking on a real steep grade in low gear<my driveway>. Id leave them alone next time >>>They arent really arcing tipe mechanical points but electronic gizmos tipe.. JB

Code: Select all

My question is then.........do they need setting/adjusting?
OEM Service manual say they are not adjustable and they aren't.

As sagebrush says, they don't need/can't be adjusted. Ignition maintenance consists of making sure all components are working correctly, cleaning all wire connections (and grounds), and making sure the coils, plug wires, and caps are in tip-top condition. Then ride! lolol

The pulse generator and the advancer unit aren't adjustable, but I think they are matched pairs. If you look at this -

https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-gl1100-gold ... LSH-OTsZ9B

there is an A, B and C for each item, and I'm sure I read somewhere that they should be the same. Not sure of the difference or how you know what you have. Maybe worth a check though.

What about the gap between the reluctor and the pickups? I don't know if that is adjustable on the GL1200s, as on other Honda models.
