Re: Over charge issue
Congrats on the post milestone!
Someone here called it, it is a Harley Davidson battery, an AGM type I believe.
I have cleaned both ends of the neg cable, I will have to go through and clean all the connections. Is there a "best" way of cleaning the tiny push in "bullet" connections? The male part is easy, not sure I have anything to get into the other though.

If you have tiny (and I do mean tiny) brass wire brushes similar to this photo but smallerdoubletrouble wrote:Is there a "best" way of cleaning the tiny push in "bullet" connections? The male part is easy, not sure I have anything to get into the other though.
then you may be able to clean out corrosion. The risk is that you inadvertently expand the inside diameter of the female connector which will cause more problems.
When I brought my '75 GL1000 back to life, I used spray contact cleaner on the female contacts, filled them with a bit of silicone dielectric grease and inserted the male connector a couple of times to clean off surface crap. Some connectors may be too corroded to salvage or the female contacts may be too loose. In that case, invest in a supply of replacement connectors which are available from several sources.

Re: Over charge issue
If the connectors aren't loose (you can usually tighten them by gently squeezing the female ones with pliers) and aren't corroded or otherwise obviously dirty, just unplugging them and re-plugging them will usually scrape a light layer of oxidation out of the way and provide good contact (using contact cleaner too won't hurt but remember that WD40 is NOT contact cleaner and its residue will attract more dirt). But that won't help if the bad contact is where the wire attaches to the terminal or at wire joints inside the harness, which is why you may need to add a wire between the reg/rec's sense wire and a known good positive or between its case and a good ground.
