Water Pump? leak. 1980 GL1100i
Hi all, I am learning as I go. I found a slow leak on my bike this morning. There appears to be a small hole drilled in what I think is my water pump. If I wipe it clean, a few minutes later I have another drop ready to drip out of the hole. It is bright green, so I am assuming this is coolant leaking from the pump. Is this hole supposed to be there? It looks like someone drilled it, and there was some "custom work" done on it by the P.O. Should I seal it? Is it supposed to leak? Dumb questions, all of them, I am sure, but any advice is appreciated. If this is the water pump, is something broken? Seals bad? Thanks.

Re: Water Pump? leak. 1980 GL1100i
Yes, the hole is supposed to be there, and it is directly related to the water pump. A constant leak typically means that the seals of the water pump are worn, which means the pump needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Some people report that they experience an occasional leak, but I don't think it's typical. For all the info you might need and step by step instructions on where to go from here, check out the front end renewal thread in ShopTalk...

Re: Water Pump? leak. 1980 GL1100i
That is your weep hole. It goes to the space between the water pump's mechanical (coolant) seal and oil seal so that if either seal fails the fluid that seal is supposed to seal in can weep out instead of being forced past the other seal to contaminate the other fluid.
Keep an eye on the leak and the level in the coolant recovery tank; If it stops keep checking occasionally just in case but if it persists you will have to replace the water pump (or rebuild the pump).
