Radiator Cap or something else?

#1

Post by Psycheonabike »

Honestly though I'd managed to get myself a runner after all this work. Apparently not.

Replaced coolant after replacing timing belts. All good until I took her out. After about 15miles she starts overheating then coolant starts gushing out of the radiator cap. Fan comes on but not until this happens. Then when she cools down she is ok for another 10 miles before it starts again.

Any ideas?

Themostat could be bad. Run it without it to see if it happens again. If it doesn't, replace the thermostat.

Just my thought, but if one's going to the trouble of pulling out the thermostat, I'd just replace it, especially for the minimal cost. I'd also make sure the overflow hoses are clear. Have you checked the water pump for excessive play?

The water pump is located directly behind the lower lower radiator hose housing. You can remove the housing and see the vanes of the pump. There should be no to very little side to side play and just a bit of rotational play in the pump. There is also a weep hole directly below the water pump in the bottom of the transmission cover. Make sure that is not plugged. The weep hole will usually leak antifreeze and /or oil if the pump/ seals are bad.

So....I took radiator off (don't ask me why) drained it and refitted. This time after starting to refill it was burping normally. Took a while to fill properly and having just got back after a harsh ride including pulling over and letting it tick over and get hot all seems well. The only thing I did notice was the neck at the top of the radiator where the cap fits looked like it was skewed or bent. Gently tapped it flat again. Maybe it wasn't creating a good deal being on a small angle.
