Hi,
Nearly there with my '82 GL1100 - she is fine once warmed up. However, only seems to fire on three (not cylinder 2) until fully warmed then she's fine. Other than that very rough when starting from cold.....
New Plugs
Valve Clearances
Cleaned Balanced Carbs (including idle jets)
Run some REDEX thorough Carbs and also to De-Coke valves through inlets
Mixture Screws set at 1.5 turns out
What else would you check?
Rough first start

Re: Rough first start
Have you readjusted the idle screws? The 1.5 turns out is the starting point. From there each carb should be adjusted to provide the best idle. In Mike Nixon's Spot there's a thread on the 'idle drop' method, which, if nothing else, will help you determine which carbs might be the problem. You will most likely find that one or more cylinders don't respond to any adjustment.
Another simple test that I like is pulling each plug wire while running and see if there's any change in engine RPM'S. When you do this, you should actually be able to hear the snap of the spark. This test can help diagnose any ignition issues and also help identify which cylinder(s) could be a problem.
