Fan switch removal

#1

Post by flyday58 »

Hey guys, I searched a while but don't see this addressed. I can get the 27mm on it but after a very few turns the socket jams against the cooling shroud. If I loosen up the radiator can I get something else in there to get the fan switch out? Or just give in to the Shinto Honda gods and remove the housing? This wouldn't be a huge deal if I had both hands but since performing surgery on my right hand with my table saw, tinkering is much more problematic.

I'm leaning toward just removing the switch housing; the switch is already broke loose so shouldn't be too hard to get out. Oh, I'm doing all this because the fan doesn't come on. Bike sat for four years cooking in the desert outside ABQ before I got it so bringing it back to life has been a chore. Now that it's running the fan won't kick on but runs fine when bypassed. I've got a new OEM switch but once I have the old one out I'll do the Shop Talk cleanup and see how it operates.

It can be done .... I’ve watched CYBORG do it .... he might see this and help out.

I think it goes something like this .... loosen the switch with the 27 mm deep socket and back it out just far enough that you can still get the socket off .... then grab the switch with something else (pliers?) and back it out the rest of the way .... the ShopTalk fix worked for me ....

Success. Fan came on at almost exactly where the Honda manual says. Now on to changing out the oil seal in the tach drive housing.
