Exhaust Muffler Replacement

#1

Post by Funkdoctor »

So I have two holes on my muffler on the bottom. I am going to put exhaust tape on for temporary repair but It has been hard to source a replacement. Stock was fine. Anywhere I can find a pair?

If the holes are small and not visible then a repair could be possible with some Tech Steel compound which will fill and hold well on a muffler repair. Replacement is always nice when available if someone has a pair to offer you.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Harley take-off mufflers are always a low-cost option. You'll need a pair of reducing flanges to make them fit the stock header pipes and a pair of brackets for hanging them from the passenger footpeg mounts. They look decent and sound really good. Nice mufflers can be had for next to nothing...or even nothing!

Are they rust holes or are they the drain holes from the factory? I ask since you mention only two holes.

Here you are a perfect reproduction, but very expensive: https://www.siriusconinc.com/pro-detail ... _id=122089
Here an aftermarket pretty cool: https://4into1.com/delkevic-4into2-stai ... gold-wing/
And here you are more options: http://www.randakksblog.com/gl1000-muffler-options/
I'is hard to find an used OEM, but occasionally I have seen some in good condition on eBay.

Andorragl he is after 78.

78/79 OEM replacements are very rare. If you are doing a full restoration there are some around but expensive. If you are just looking for a riding set then I would definitely look for some Harley take offs. I have a left and right Honda OEM on my shelf but they would cost as much as some bikes for me to let go of.

I found a number of them. Is there a particular model that works well?

Early sportster. They won't have catalytic converters in them. Also look for one's without the crossover. Makes for a cleaner look.

I went with Emgo reverse megaphones. Dont run them lean like I did, blued up badly.
Probably will replace them with the same once I'm done carb tuning.
