Brake master options - 1975 Gl1000 with '78/79 forks

#1

Post by tdskip »

Hi folks, hope everyone is having a good day so far.

My brake master is leaking, likely from where the bottom of the reservoir is so I am planning on replacing it. I know I need a unit compatible with my later 1978/1979 front set up but have seen that later Goldwing units up to the mid-1980's also fit and have some advantages.

Any been there/done that to pass along before I order?

Thanks!

Leak can be reservoir, reservoir o-ring, or the piston seals. I used a Chinabay master on a '79 CB750F last winter that worked Ok once I disassembled, cleaned, and properly assembled it. Get a 16mm piston one if you go that route, and pull it apart, clean, and assemble properly with brake fluid for lube. Any dual-caliper master for that period Honda should work. 75-79 all had dual calipers and although the masters were different in some years, the all worked Ok. The rectangular reservoirs tend to leak more in my experience. Rebuild kits and reservoirs are available for yours, although a Chinabay is cheaper. Make sure it has a brake light switch.

I bought a Chinesium M/C from ebay some time ago. I THINK (but not sure) it's this one:

It's worked flawlessly for me so far (about a year) and comes with a rebuild kit.

tdskip: Your link doesn't work

The problem with the ones from China is that some of them are great and others are garbage and you can't tell from the pics. I ordered 2 of them from one seller and when they came they had different bores and the outer boot of one tore while I was disassembling it for cleaning. I installed one on my winter machine and before I got around to installing the other on my 'Wing the first one had started acting very strange: If I pulled the lever quickly it worked normally but if I pulled the lever slowly it would reach the handlegrip before any braking force was applied. I gave up on them and bought ones that someone knowledgeable recommended and they both work fine several years later except that the sight glass started to deteriorate on one (this is not a big deal because sight glasses are cheap and I don't mind replacing it every few years when I change the brake fluid).

That said, I have heard good things about some of the ones on eBay that claim to be from a "US seller" so the one Terry linked is probably one of the good ones.

BTW: One of the things I like about the Chinese ones is that you can see the sight glass when you are on the bike but the ones Honda used in the '80s had the sight glass on the opposite side (what were they thinking?).
Did you know that if you fill the master cylinder to the upper mark (or almost the top of the sight glass) when you install new brake pads and there are no leaks the level in the sight glass is an accurate indicator of pad wear (worn pads = pistons protrude more = lower level in reservoir).

Bob makes a good point. I bought mine from a US seller. They care about their ratings. The only time I got screwed on Ebay was by a foreign seller - Singapore as I recall. I never order from overseas anymore.

Sorry about the link, it was US Seller on Amazon. It has the brake fluid level sight, which I wanted.

Thanks for the follow-up.
I put a rear MC on a CB750F that was a HURI. Leaked from the reservoir input to the MC because the screw hole was drilled off. I was able to wallow out the hole so the o-ring could seal. Contacted the seller and they seemed unconcerned.

Hi guys - hope everyone is having a good weekend.

I wanted to close the loop on this and provide some feedback. I mounted the HURI unit and, yep, it was bad. Called Amazon and complained and sent a replacement that seems to be working fine.

I installed APEX stainless front brake lines and holy cow what an improvement.

Thanks for all of the help.

Who did t he replacement come from? If it was the same seller and the replacement was OK that says something positive about them...

I replaced the stock 11/16" MC with a 5/8" one from 4into1. Great price. Works great and looks stock.

I think that is the same unit as HURI sells via Amazon.
