If you’ve ever been turning the right cam backwards with the timing at T1 and had the valve spring suddenly move the cam, there is a significant clunk of the valve hitting the piston. Is it enough to bend the valve? It probably doesn’t take much. I don’t know, but I have also had them pop when you remove the belt, then removed the head and it leaves a mark on the piston and valve face. This was on my hybrid motor, so maybe it’s not as bad on a stock motor. I think it’s still a good practice and a good opportunity to check valve clearances as well. More work? Twenty minutes?

I have done it both ways, and as Robin said, it is much easier to turn.

Rotating the pistons down in the jugs isn’t necessary either. I still do it.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Okay. Next I want to replace the seals on the valve stems. What's the easiest way to remove the pulley so I can get the tappets out of the way?

No need to pull the pulley from the cams. The tappets and the cam holders should unbolt as one piece, then pull the cam/pulley assembly out next. That should just leave the head with the valve assemblies, at which point use your valve spring compressor tool of choice (although the big c-clamp version works best).
