Rear Master Cylinder Swap

#1

Post by kjmarti2 »

Anyone know if a '78/'79 rear master cylinder is compatible with a '76 GL1000? The parts look identical to me but they have different part numbers. Looking for a replacement and these appear to be difficult to come by (as with almost everything else on this bike it seems).

Thanks!

NO. The mounting to the frame is different.

A common thing that has been done is to take a master cylinder from a newer 1800, and modify the mounts to fit these bikes.

Figures, can't have things being easier can we? It's amazing how similar those 2 bikes look but they're completely different in terms of part numbers.

I looked at the 1800 master cylinders but I don't think I'm up to modifying the frame at this point. I managed to find a '76 rear master cylinder on eBay that looks to be in pretty good condition. Could probably use a new paint job though. Anyone ever painted a master cylinder? I'm assuming it's the same process as painting anything else, and since I've just repainted the tank I already have the materials. Just a matter of sanding and taping off all the holes I'd think.

You don’t actually modify the frame, only fab a simple bracket for the new MC to mount to. If you haven’t committed to the EBay job, check this link out. It is for an 1100, but the 1000 is very similar.

I just rebuilt my rear master
I thought I would have to paint it because it looked rough.
Cleaned it up with a brass brush on my dremil tool
The original coating is pretty robust
