Driveshaft boots

#1

Post by Saltspringer »

I am trying to find a replacement for the driveshaft boot that fits between the rear of the engine and the drive shaft...

The Honda part number is 52105-371-000, and a search of the usual suppliers has found it to be discontinued by Honda and unavailable. Has anyone located a modern replacement?

I have a small tear in the one I have, I guess I could try and fix it with some special goop but I think that the rubber is getting old and fragile anyway.

I contacted a company in Vancouver who suggest they can get hold of something very similar as a special production run. I will let the forum know what the cost would be if I put together an order. Seems like most people will need a set of drive shaft bellows at some point, if there is enough interest I will have them make a batch.

I'd be interested if the price is reasonable. I've been replacing most rubber parts that I can get my hands on, and it's nice to have extra parts that are difficult to come by.

Not to hijack the thread here, but on a related note I've been looking for a pair of those rubber cushions for the gauge cluster. Anyone been able to find something similar that works? OP, do you think that company would do something similar for this part as well?

I have had that boot on my watch list at CMS for quite some time. Recently they notified me that they had 1 in stock so I bought it.
I would be interested in a few of those boots too to share out between my friends over here.

My original Honda one has cracks in it so I was thinking of replacing it with the $2 silicone solution:

I cut the end off of a dust catcher for a drill. It fits right into the groove nicely, but I have no idea if it will hold up over time or if the spinning shaft will catch it and rip it to pieces. I may just use the 45 year old dry cracked rubber OEM one.

The gauge cushions from a 1980/82 CB 900 C will fit the GL1000/1100 gauges and were still available from Honda a few years ago

Great tip, thanks! Turns out searching for some led me to find a new pair for the GL1100 which I'm hoping will fit really nice on my 1000.

Re the boots, the ones to fit the GL500/650 SilverWings have been NLA for about 15 years. S CX500forum member took his old one to an auto parts place when it wasn't busy and a friendly parts person took the time to look through the CV boots and find one that could be easily modified to work (happens to fit some '80s Civics). When I put Eccles together in 2006 I bought and installed one and it was still in perfect condition when I inspected it while replacing the engine in the fall of 2018.

Perhaps someone needs to do the same for the ones that fit GoldWings and publish the part number that works.

As for patching old ones, we're talking about old rubber (= where will it drack next?) that has been in contact with grease for decades (=what will stick to that?).
As for used ones, see above.

Having spoken to the company in Vancouver, unfortunately it sounds like the tight clearances to other engine components would make it very difficult to build a replacement boot.

The company suggested a stitched construction, but needed too great a difference between ID and OD to put it together.

I think that there must be an alternative out there somewhere. These bellows must be used in hundreds of applications worldwide...
