Cylinder Head Assembly

#1

Post by pjgoeman »

I’m in the process of assembling my 1978 project bike and have a couple of questions -

1- The shop manual specifies the use of a sealant on the mating surfaces between the cam holder and the cylinder head. There was no sealant there when I disassembled the heads and searching thru the forum I don’t see where anyone mentions it in their project descriptions. My gut feeling is that a sealant will affect clearances and they could vary depending on the type of sealant used (the manual doesn’t specify). Leave it out?

2- For the cam holder bolts should I lube them with a moly grease like I did with the head bolts?

3- When I disassembled the coolant parts on top of the motor several of the bolts were corroded and I broke a couple of them. In general, should I use anti-seize on the bolts that screw into the motor?

Yes , use some anti-seize.

I've done a lot of heads and I've never put any sealant between the cam holder and mounting surface. If you do want to put something on I'd use something like gaskacinch or my go to permatex aviation sealant. That will not affect the clearances.

From John's site:
http://wingovations.com/cams-and-rockers/4579471096

Note the last 2 paragraphs:
In the above picture you will notice a red ring around one of the bolt holes This orifice is the pressure feed hole for the oil to the rockers, shafts and cams. The oilways also run round all the carrier bolts.

We don't want to loose any pressure to these so apply a smear of sealer (only a smear or you run the risk of blocking up one or more of the small oil holes in the shafts. It only takes a microscopic amount of sealer to seal between two machined surfaces) on the carrier pedestals and also around the outer diameter of the new ( they are, of course, new, aren't they?) cam oil seal(s) before bolting the the cam carrier down.
Here's the pic he's talking about

Thanks for the help. I wouldn’t have attempted this project bike without all the information and help on this site. The heads are assembled, new timing belts installed, and valve clearances set. Now it’s on to the wiring loom and figuring out where everything goes and repairing a few cut wires,
