76 LTD paint code / touch up paints???

#1

Post by shopguy »

Looking for a source of touch up paint for the 76 LTD paint: Candy limited maroon custom, R7CC
Any help appreciated..... I know others have looked and come up empty...

So what is the alternative for the small nicks? what's "close" for a nice rider quality, non-show bike.
5 footer touch up is good enough....

That there is truth, lol!

Research local custom paint shops, especially 'old school' shops. If there's not a painter who will do touch-ups, they might be able to direct you to someone who does. Having a paint code doesn't necessarily mean whatever mix it comes out with is going to match 40+ year old paint. A skilled touch-up 'artist' matches the paint on the spot...

Take your panel to an automotive paint supplier who will be able to "scan" your part and mix a touch up paint for you. May not be exact but close enough for a 5 foot look see. I have had a couple of paints mixed this way and was happy with one and not so much with the other. I think the touch up paint match may not be easy to do with a "candy" paint color, but an experienced paint tech should be able to advise one way or the other. Just my 2 cents worth

I talked to a paint tech who said scanning candy colors doesn't work very well......

Honda used some odd methods to get some colors. I stripped a candy green CB500 tank. It was blue candy over gold basecoat...

I would agree that scanning a true candy paint, especially ones from Honda, will probably not work. The base metallic coat over the primer makes a huge difference in final appearance and color. I would be careful of using nail polish as the Acetone in the nail polish may very well make a small scratch much worse by ruining the base coat and surrounding paint. The lacquer paint Honda used is not durable to many solvents. It is quite delicate. An experienced automotive paint shop may be able to help but you will pay for their experience. I repainted a spare set of false tank and side panels last fall. After many hours of reading and prep work the job I did is quite nice but the color is not the maroon I wanted. It is closer to red. I didn't have enough blue in the metallic flake coat and not enough yellow in the mid coat. Candy autobody painting is truly an art form!

I'll have to just do some comparisons.....and more comparisons.....and more. I could probably just leave the nicks alone. Battle scars I guess....

Have the paint shop scan it and buy the smallest amount they can mix. For 5ft touchup, it should do.
