Idle speed query

#1

Post by RoyB »

Hi all,
just fitted my newly refurbed carbs to my '79 GL1000 & got her to fire up......to about 3000rpm.

Turned the throttle stop screw till it was off the stop, cables set correctly (actually loosened them off to make sure) but could not get the revs down! I noticed they would drop If I pushed on the linkage, I also noticed an adjuster on top of it at #4 (as picture) so took a chance & adjusted it & the revs came down.......my question is, what do these do (can't find anything in the manual or online), should I be adjusting & if so, should I adjust the others the same?
cheers

That is the left to right side sync screw. Yes, you do need to adjust all three. But you need to use sync gauges to do it. Also make sure none of your linkage is in a bind. That could cause it to not let the idle screw get to the stop. The choke cam out of adjustment could also cause that.

For future reference, it's good practice to visually/manually sync the carbs before installing them back on the bike. Most carbs have an inlet pinhole in the carb body just about where the throttle butterfly hits. This provides an easy reference as you gradually adjust the idle screw.

I've had multiple bikes where the manual sync performed perfectly once they are back on the bike, as long as the valves are also in spec. You can still do the running vacuum sync described in the Randakk link for final tweaking.

Also good to test for fuel leaks before re-installing.

I've also checked online, the forum & my manual (Haynes) for checking the choke cam.....nothing?

I believe as long as the high idle actuating lever is correctly oriented in the throttle linkage when the complete carburetor 'rack' is reassembled, that is a very small concern. To change the high idle speed when the choke is fully actuated would require a substantial bending of a robust tab.
Slightly open the throttle while pulling the choke cable knob out. This reduces the effort required to fully set the high idle when starting. tumb2

I bent it on mine to where it idles around 2500. It can be done, not sure how many times before it would break.

When I have time and when it’s humid, I run it for about sixty seconds, then turn it off for a few minutes to let the heat move into the intake runners and throughout the motor.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I have a throttle lock on my dressed 1000. I use the choke for about 10-15 seconds then set the throttle lock for abut 1500 rpm till I mount up.

I generally roll it outside, climb on, fire it up, put my gloves on and ride away (on really warm days I don't put the gloves on but I don't advise that if you are on 2 wheels). I find they warm up faster under load than at idle and I take the choke off about when I get to the corner.
