+1 on loosening all the valve adjustments so the valves retract as far as possible to avoid hitting the piston. You'll just have to do a valve adjustment once you get the pulleys lined up but you were going to do that anyway right?

Hi, original poster here. I want to thank you all for your expertise and encouragement. It took a while and some hands on learning to translate your advice into reality, but I now have everything where it needs to be. Now on to the valve adjust.
