I love the game changers. I have a 78GL 1000, but would love a nice 75. I just acquired a nice 75 SOHC 750 K5, but would love a Sandcast 69. Landed a 79 CBX some years back, a needy CX500 Turbo last year, and a first year Vmax.
Game changers. Just like the Goldwing was.

I'm feeling even better about my first year '97 Valkyrie now...
(BTW, did a little thumbing through my book the other day. The language was a bit flowery, but the gist is that the Goldwing wasn't necessarily built to be the fastest thing on the road, but the best all-rounder- handling, speed, ride, etc. Of course, that's kind of the goal with EVERY product one is trying to sell, so your mileage may vary.
Also, the M1 "prototype" with the flat-6 engine wasn't REALLY a prototype to the Goldwing, more of a precursor. It was built as an engineering exercise, to see how far certain parts of motorcycle design could be pushed before becoming impractical. Less of a "Model 1 Goldwing" and more of "Inspired the thought process that would eventually lead to the GL".)

I'd rather have the last year of the model so that most of the bugs are worked out....

Re: Were they REALLY this fast?
Sandcast 750's were absolutely more powerful than post models, and would certainly be a neat bike to have in the collection. Always wanted to ride a CBX too, had an old neighbor with one and he always teased me about selling it to me for a nice price as a wedding gift (it was a single year special edition one i think???), but he always backed out on the offers....

I recently rode Harleys new adventure bike. It’s supposed to have 140 some odd horsepower. I had it in its highest horsepower mode (sport). All I can say is my chicken wing pulls way harder then that $23,000 bike.

Re: Were they REALLY this fast?
I got my first road bike back in 1970. It was a year old sportster. Since I started out with “that crowd “ I continued riding harleys up until about 7 or 8 years ago when I sold my last one. Last December I was looking for a new project and ran across my ‘75 wing that had a new clutch, rebuilt carbs, new water pump, Henry Abe wheels. Just needed some finishing touches. After completely dismantling it, changing belts and idlers, installing new brakes and tires, painting and polishing everything I could, I was finally ready to go for my very first ride on a Wing. I quickly came to realize what I had been missing for the last 40+ years. Smooth effortless power. Sure there are faster bikes out here here but at 69 I better keep it sane. Since I finished it I have bought, cosmetically restored two more early wings and have a newfound appreciation for Honda’s engineering. All knowledge that all on here already appreciate. It’s like I had a lot of catching up to do hence going through three wings in 6 months.

Re: Were they REALLY this fast?
Several decades ago I was walking around looking at the bikes at a rally with a friend (I was there on my first 'Wing and he was a Harley guy}. When we came across a 'Wing with a bunch of chrome bolted on he shook his head and said he didn't get why these guys spend their money on that instead of on the engine.
I grinned and told him "It's a GoldWing. The engine is already right."
