Difficulty Adjusting Clutch Cable
After reviewing the available info on how to adjust the clutch cable on a 76 GL1000, I started in. According to the info, all I had to do was loosen cable at the clutch housing and at the clutch lever, then screw in adjuster to seat and back out 3/4 turn. Re-tighten lower adjuster, then upper adjuster to specs and you're good to go. Well, after two-and-a-half hours of struggling, I did end up improving my clutch operation but it sure did not go as suggested. In the end, I concluded that my cable no longer had any adjustment left. Here is my video showing what I encountered. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqsE41eBQuw

Re: Difficulty Adjusting Clutch Cable
Leonard ! I watched your video. Yes. 'Difficulty Adjusting Clutch Cable'' was accurate.
Hoping you weren't struggling with this project, today. Hot and sunny in the driveway.
Here is a link to the Honda GL1000 Shop Manual:
http://www.goldwingworld.com/pages/GL10 ... manual.pdf
Under the Honda GL1000 Shop Manual's Clutch chapter heading, on its page 10-5, you will find the clutch free-play adjustment info. ( page 156 in the pdf. )
If the lower clutch cable barrel adjuster jam nut hadn't been a stumbling block, and you had understood the initial loosen locknut and 3/4 turn freeplay adjustment was performed at the clutch throw out lever pivot, itself, this would have been a much easier job.
Clutch Free-play Adjustment starts under the round cover.
NOTE! When the clutch throw out free-play lever adjuster screw locknut is loosened, the adjuster screw should then turn freely with your fingertips. It would be a Best Practice to utilize a screwdriver only when holding the properly adjusted screw while cinching its locknut down.. .
From seeing its general appearance in the video, I would advise you to obtain and install a new clutch cable assembly now.
You have my telephone number.

Re: Difficulty Adjusting Clutch Cable
Hi Cliff. Thanks for your input. Your experience is a real asset for me. To be clear, I did understand that the goal was to remove the cover plate and adjust the actuating lever. That was really very straight forward. I ran into trouble because the instructions tell you to back off the cable adjustments top and bottom, BEFORE you adjust the actuating lever. So, once I was unable to adjust the cable where it enters the cover, I was stuck. That then lead to the issue of getting the end of the cable off the actuating lever so that I could extract the cable from the cover plate and then, when I had more room, I could unlock the jam nut on the lower cable adjuster. Why the heck was I unable to extract the end of the cable from the actuating lever linkage? I have ordered the new cable from Randakk's. Bike night at the Beach starts Tue. June 15th and then goes all summer, weather permitting. Do you think you might come over or should I plan to come visit you?

Re: Difficulty Adjusting Clutch Cable
Call me. Trike isn't reassembled yet, and my pickup is down with rear axle issues.
edit: Leonard and I had a nice telephone conversation. He is not in trouble.
We will meet up when the trike is ready to go.

Re: Difficulty Adjusting Clutch Cable
Leonard, on my 76 (and several others) it seems that they pinch the bracket a bit so the cable doesn’t just fall out, this makes it difficult to remove the cable when you need to.
Also once you loosen the cable at both ends I reach up and pull the lever to its stop and then adjust the center screw. My .02
Sounds like Cliff has you taken care of and smiling, I hope !
