GL1000 Sidecover Plastic Type?

#1

Post by Lucien Harpress »

Does anyone know what type of plastic the sidecovers for the first gen ('76, in my case) GL1000s were made of? I know bike started using ABS a bit later on, but the 1000 seemed a bit early for that. I've got a part that needs gluing, and I need to know what solvent-type adhesive to use.

(The tab/grommet on the bottom of my yellow 1000 is JUST about broken off, and I'd like to salvage what I can before the bottom breaks off completely)
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

I used abs black cement on the side panel on my 76 that got cracked when it dove off my trailer. it set up hard and my body man had no complaints when he prepped and painted it.

It is ABS. You can still buy Oatey ABS plumbing cement on Amazon and get the Oatey clear cleaner at most local hardware stores. I reinforce with fiberglass cloth bedded in the cement on the back side. You can get pieces of broken ABS plastic from your local dealership service department from wreck take-offs.

I've used white ABS plumbing joints as a source for filler material. Rasp it off and mix it into the plumbing cement.

Thanks. I've already got some lying around, so all the better. I do have some plans to reinforce the area afterward, but I have to be careful, seeing as how yellow sidecovers are fairly impossible to find ....

I'm missing a piece of the fairing on the fj. I bought a 1/8" sheet of abs off amazon. I'm going to attempt to make a piece to replace it.
It also had a broken tab on a side panel. I happened to have abs handles from my garage door install that were never used so I cut a section off them to reinforce the tabs.

I used this with great success: https://www.amazon.com/Plastruct-Plasti ... 16&sr=8-20

I followed up with some plastic staples and JB weld. strong as ever

A good quality acetone will melt and weld ABS very effectively, hold the pieces together and 'wick' the acetone in with a paint brush, capillary attraction will pull the Acetone into the joint and weld it. Use some 80g fibreglass cloth and more acetone to reinforce over the joint again working the Acetone into the cloth to melt it into the surface.

By the way plastruct plastiweld is essentially Acetone, it is much cheaper to buy a can from an automotive paint supplier

I use Plast-Aid to fix side covers with excellent results.
