Oil filter Washer
Hey All,
Can I use just a regular washer for the oil filter on top of the spring or does it need to be a thin one. Will a thicker washer do any damage?

Re: Oil filter Washer
Use what you have. There are more bikes that come through with no washer than one's that have them. It is just to protect the rubber on the filter from getting cut in to by the spring.

Re: Oil filter Washer
It needs to be a small OD washer that just contacts the recessed rubber gasket on the filter. My current 76 project was missing the washer and I found that the washer that goes between the rear brake lever and cotter pin was the perfect size. I just happened to have an extra in the bone pile.

Re: Oil filter Washer
And, for heaven's sake the spring and washer are to press the filter TOWARDS the engine, not away! Yes, I've had two now with the spring installed in the wrong place.

Re: Oil filter Washer
The current cb750f I’m redoing came with no spring or washer, the owner, who I’ve known for a long time liked to always brag about how frequently he changed the oil & filter. And more bikes that I’ve seen/done don’t have a washer than do. I keep a number of them in my toolbox, you can get them cheap on flea bay, I usually buy a pack of them.

Re: Oil filter Washer
This just came up on cx500forum. apparently these are a perfect fit
https://www.ebay.com/itm/164573184907?var=464134224082
BTW: The washer also prevents the spring from pushing through the grommet and into the inside of the filter.

Re: Oil filter Washer
My most recent wing was missing both the spring and the washer, so I salvaged a spring from a GL500 spare engine and grabbed a copper washer from a HF bulk pack of sealing washers.

Gents;
I used an AN960 stainless steel washer, works very well, I just cannot remember the ID.

Re: Oil filter Washer
Thanks for the link Bob, I just ordered some and will wait for the shipment
Washer is 28mm OD X 20mm ID or 30 OD X 20 ID as I ordered both sizes which will fit the standard OE style filters.
