timing belt change just got easier

#1

Post by 5speed »

a member of a goldwing forum I belong to on facebook made these.
Just made these two pieces that will make replacing belts a lot easier. They lock the pulleys in place when you have the T1 mark centered. They bolt in the cover holes and use M6 x 50 and m6 x 60 bolts. They also have marks to assure the pulleys are in the correct position. Tested in a '81 motor.

As it holds the gear still, don't really matter where it is , as long as it don't move....
so if all you are doing is changing the belt only...and you can guarantee that the cam doesn't move then it wouldn't matter where the motor is in the rotation?
if you have both belts off (like i just did) then you would need to observe the markings.
is that right?
lol maybe i have OCD that would make me so nervous!

I'm no expert but I think you are correct. Any means you use to lock the pulley in place while the belt is off should serve the same purpose. What if you were to drill and tap a hole in the pulley, insert a bolt, tighten just enough to keep the pulley from turning while you change the belt. Sounds like it could work..

Looks real useful if you do several a year, but I've only done four total (well, five because I changed them on Hunley again when it broke a cam). I've not had a problem once I started GETTING DOWN AT THE LEVEL OF THE BELTS TO LINE UP THE MARKS. Parallax really messes with you otherwise.
