You ready for this?????

Was perusing Facebook Marketplace, and stumbled across a virtually identical 82’ Naked wing. Same color. Half the mileage. 3 hours away……What I do???….. I bought it!!!

Check this out……

Almost identical to Uncle’s, except the front brake is collapsed on this one. Pull the lever and it bottoms out. Brake fluid all over the trailer floor. Carbs are just as glued as Uncle’s was. Needs both master cylinders rebuilt, carbs redone, battery, and typical oil/air filter, fluids etc. Don’t know the dates on the tires yet, but they’re likely OLD. Was the same scenario as Uncle’s too. Single owner. Been sitting (fortunately without fuel in it) for the past 3 years. I have the 1982 title ready for transfer. Now the question…….do I just fix it, and sell it? Or do I PIMP THIS RIDE??? ….uh , and then sell it?

The prospect of having two Identical customized GL1100’s is sooo tempting. Imagine showing up at your favorite bike gathering spot with you on one and your neighbor on the other? Twins always draw a crowd.

Or, Just fix it for the lowest cost, and sell it with a clear conscience to a lucky buyer? What to do, what to do…..

Here’s “Thing 1” with the rear wheel assembly in place and the new fender mock up…..Opinions are requested..

Checked the tires on “Thing 2” ( the unchanged unit), they’re from 1981 and 1990… so that’s goin on the parts list.

Some would suggest that you keep the second one stock but if you want the complete motorcycle experience I'd recommend adding a sidecar to one of them

Well, the question I’m hoping to get an answer to is the original “ keep it stock with minimal cost to make running safely or duplicate the first build and have a twin?”

I’m being guided by a good friend to go with the former rather than the latter. I’m wondering what the market value of a good running, clean, stock 82’ GL1100 is? Vs what it’ll bring in with my preferred mods.

I know my tastes are not those of a purist. I found the original design almost hilarious in some instances, I.e the turn signals, the width with highway bars and pegs, the goofy rear disk brake cover mounted on the back of the caliper (WTF? ), and the odd seat fastener. There’s so much incredible design in this bike, yet a few goofy things too.

Please, all comments are welcomed. If there’s any experts in regard to these questions, I assume its you folks.

Still considering what I'll do with THING 2. Randakks is out of carb rebuild kits, so I'll focus on the brakes. The tank is clean as a whistle inside which is a big relief. Looked at carb rebuild kits from Dennis Kirk but they omit the accelerator pump and 4 bladders the carbs need. And they supply new jets which I dont think I'll need. Debating on letting the next owner put tires on it, but leaning towards putting them on myself. The bike can't be considered safe with 40 year old bridgestones on it.

Bladders?

Even if you did need the jets it isn't usually recommended to use any of the metal parts that come with aftermarket carb kits. Often the jets aren't the sizes market and even if float valve needles are the right length the chrome often comes off in chunks.

BTW: GL1100 carbs have 4 air cuts. But the good news is you don't really need them

Bob, the guidance is much appreciated. I see now, after reading thru the above thread, that the "air cuts"( i.e bladders) are not needed. I'm gonna focus on the brakes, and keep my fingers crossed the Randakks kit becomes available soon. If not, then I'll likely use Dennis Kirks kit, but use the existing jets/float needles.

Those are both beautiful bikes. Really!

I'd suggest keeping Thing 2 stock as a sort of "before" and "after" for side-by-side comparison. If one bike should need tinkering, you have a spare to ride. Swap in a different saddle on Thing 2 to address your comfort challenge with the stock one.

I (unfortunately? hmm.) quickly found that one Wing is not enough, and not because they're unreliable.

On the value of Thing 2 in tip-top shape, who knows? As with most things - and especially all things vintage - it comes down to what one is willing to pay.

Maybe there's a simpler question you can answer for yourself: "What would you be willing to sell it for?" Add a little to that number and list it if/when you're looking to sell. If you get more than your bottom line, good for you. If you get offered less, hold onto the bike. If nobody nibbles, it's worth more to you than it is to someone else. Keep it. Easy.

BTW did you get the cx500 rear fender and how is it fitting?
I needed to cut off some of it to get it to meet with the inner plastic fender section , but once that was done it joined beautifully, and settled in at the perfect angle. Just had to drill some holes and put in 2 screws with locknuts. itll be great once I get the tail light. Awaiting delivery on that now and then wiring the tail light and signals and she's ready to register and ride...

problem is...swapping in any other seat is costly. The balance of the mods I made on THING 1 were fairly inexpensive. The most costly part of the changes were the seat ($280) the tires ($260 mounted)and the randakk carb kit ($200). The bar, mirrors, fenders, & lights didn't even come to $200. I've already resigned to putting safe tires on it so there's that. The more I look at THING 1, the more I'm leaning towards replicating it with THING 2. Plus THING 2 is in even better shape!. The mileage is half of THING 1's, the gas tank was like new inside, and it seems to have been stored in a dryer environment. Less rust on various parts, and generally even better condition overall. If I made it into an OEM style roadster, I think I'd get my money back and then some. If I leave it stock looking, its not going to be very unique, and may only draw a purist. As where the re-design may draw in wider interest...but, who knows. I'm just havin' too much fun.

But the purpose of buying THING 2 was to fix it, and sell it. Not have 2 Goldwing's. I've got a Triumph Thunderbird Sport thats my main ( and only ) ride for several year snow and its hard to rationalize having 2, let alone 3(!) retro roadsters in the barn.
Here's the Triumph. Its a real creampuff. Gentlemans bike. Quiet, and easy to ride. Just way top heavy with a full tank of gas.

Beautiful Triumph, for sure.

If it's a fix/sell GL1100, maybe just do that. A stock naked in great shape may be more desirable as a clean palette for someone else's custom idea than a clone of your custom idea. And you're right about the seat investment relative to other bits. I'm all in at about $900+ (plus dozens of hours of my labor) on an '82 GL1100 build, and the thought of dropping $250 on a seat just feels wrong. If the bike cost me $4k+, I wouldn't think twice about a new seat cost.

Agreed. That’s kinda where you make the decision to do the complete re styling. Because that bread loaf seat doesn’t really look right with the large fenders. I am still looking at $260 for tires, $60 for battery, and $225 for the carb kit, just to keep it stock, and running. Plus the PO put low a low rise bar on it, and it will hit the tank if I turn full lock. Luckily I have everything he removed, including engine crash bars, and original handlebar. Maybe I’ll swap those back in too.

When theyre both Done I’ll post some shots.

Well, thing 1’s maiden voyage was great until it wasn’t. Left the barn, drove beautifully for the first 3.2 miles. Then, the rear caliper froze. Forcing an immediate pull over into a gas station where I then got a ride from a friendly gentleman and retrieved it on the trailer. The fault is my own. I likely damaged the caliper compressing the pistons during reassembly. So close. Back to the workshop to rebuild the caliper and flush the entire brake system. Good times.
