Gl1000 fuel filter

#1

Post by Gowing »

I changed my fuel filter from stock clear plastic Honda type filter to Randek metal filter.
Was wondering if anyone has had fuel starvation at sustained 80 to 90 mph?
Works fine at 4500 rpm and lower. New fuel pump, recent pistol Pete (son) carb rebuild.

Try switching back to a plastic one and see if there is a difference. Never used one of those filter so can’t comment. Is it clean and assembled correctly flow wise?

Have those filters on all 3 of the wings.
No starvation issues but sustained 80 + very rare for me.

Can't speak to the flow characteristics of the aforementioned filter, but I have a cheapo clear AutoZone filter in my 1000. Never had any starvation issues. Including a fair number of sustained high speed runs on dark desert highways.

No starvation problems....but....when we were at Deadwood, I noticed a fuel leak on my wife's 750 Shadow. It turned out to be a semi-disintegrated Randakk filter. The chrome had disappeared inside the fuel line and the pot metal underneath was turning to dust. Scraped the nasty off, reassembled and stopped the leak. Just a heads up.

I once had on that was plugged due to a poorly coated gas tank but when clean the bike would sustain 100 mph plus. Unless it has a bunch of crud I really doubt it is the issue.

Interesting. I have a Randakk fuel filter that I've never used (with 2 tanks I wanted matching filters) but mine doesn't appear to be chromed. It may be anodized but the finish is not as bright as in the pics on GoldWingDocs.

I wonder if the people who have had that problem had water in their fuel?

Replaced with plastic Honda filter and soaked gas cap. Seemed to fix problem.

I have the similar filter on my bike, in fact I sell them too but not a chrome version for the same reason as Gowing found. Anodised verions are fine. I have run mine at 90 for miles with no starvation problems. Noting that you soaked the gas cap; blocked vent was more likely your problem.
