Fuel pump bad ?? - RESOLVED! Now need help with gas cap vent

#1

Post by maury »

Today, while out riding, the bike began to stutter. It seemed obvious that it was starved of gas. Tried switching to RESERVE without success. Disconnected the fuel line out of the pump and gas was coming out although difficult to judge the quantity (seemed like it was not a strong flow). Luckily I had some siphon hose and a few tools. Rigged up the siphon hose from the tank directly into the intake hose past the fuel pump to the carbs. It didn't run perfectly but was able to get back around 30 miles.
My question is ...... without a drip from the underside of the fuel pump, could it still be bad?

There is a flow rate test for the pump in the Honda FSM, yet you seem to have partially answered your question with at least the flow rate seeming to be off.
How about your filter pre pump, is it new or old and possibly partially blocked with crud? How about the gas tank interior and pick up screens, or the internal metal lines in the tank?

Try running with the fuel cap loose. Could be a plugged cap vent

If the diaphram isn't not leaking, about the only other failure I would suspect is the valves in the pump. That is, as long as the whole cam is spinning (Ouch!) They appear to be made of a phenolic material. The ones in my '75 pump failed, so I replaced the pump with one from a GL1100.

Check the fuel filter to make sure if it isn't clogged, plugged or deteriorating.

Thanks for the responses.
Gas is flowing freely through the filter.
How does one check the filter is still good?
I take it that the GL1100 pump is made with a better material?

UPDATE:
Just tested fuel volume outflow from the pump. Completely normal (15oz / minute).
Hooked the fuel lines back on.
Started right up and idled perfectly up to temperature. When revved up, went idle perfectly every time.
What??????
Let me describe a bit more what happened yesterday.
It acted up / died and we made sure the fuel petcock was in the correct position. Some hesitation for a few minutes but then ran fine. Put 3 fresh gallons in. Went another 15 or so miles and it died at an intersection. Would start but then immediately die. When it started, could rev to around 3-4000 rpm and then it would drop off and die. It was obvious to me fuel was starved. We tried for a good 10 minutes to get it to run before deciding to put the siphon hose onto the fuel line after the pump going to the carbs and then nursed it back. At first while riding, learned to hit the starter when saw rpms dropping (yeah while riding) and this would get the rpms back up. The last 15 miles or so it was easier to keep running (not having the rpms dropping off and using starter) even at stops/while still keeping rpms up a bit.
Ignition?? Hmmmm.......

When you hit the starter, it bypasses the ballast resistor, giving more juice to the coils. I suspect a wiring issue.

I can't help but ask ........
What would I be checking for in the wiring?
Thanks !!

I would suspect a hot cold issue. Some component in the ignition is failing while hot. After it stalls and cools a little it will operate although not completely correct. Once it cools all the way it works OK. Ballast resister would be my first suspect but if that does not correct it then maybe some other component in the ignition system. Are you still running points or do you have an aftermarket ignition?

Sorry, but I think you need to be checking every connection from the battery to the coils. Every one. Some are not so easy to get to (like the ones on the coil), but need checked and tightened. All connections for them under the shelter left side, going to the points, etc.

UPDATE #2:
Each of the last 3 days I have started and ridden 5 - 10 miles around my area (don't want to get too far away).
Has started / idled / run flawlessly.
Have checked the wires that I can see easily (opened the false tank side).
Again thinking it through......... if it was a wiring/ignition problem. Why would it have run (although roughly) after hooking the siphon hose from the tank?
It really seemed like a lack of gas at the time with the revving up and then dying despite throttle wide open.
Bad gas??

I believe today I solved the fuel issue. Changing out the fuel lines at the pump and when completed, left the "out" line off while running the starter. NO FUEL. I opened the gas cap and fuel began gushing out.
So.....
Are there replacement caps (can't easily find one)?
Clear the vent? I see a hole in the center bottom only.
Disassemble? I looked and see a couple of small metal retainers that seem to keep the top and bottom connected.
Suggestions??

Soak in vinegar or a good hot water detergent, blow dry with brake cleaner and go riding
