cylinder 3+4 not firing

#1

Post by pierce »

Before I get any further, I'm running an 86 engine with CDI (black box) in my 76.

My problem is that it is only running on cylinders 1+2.

I am aware that the right coil fires cylinders 1+2, so I replaced my coils with dyna. Much better spark, but still nothing. So I then replaced the black box. Still nothing on 3+4.

Looking for more input from wing gurus to solve the issue.

Ordered pulse generator (luckily they are in the front on an 86), but if that doesn't work I'm all out of ideas.

Anyone have any input or am I missing anything?

My bike has been running perfect until the other day when it just died and I couldn't get it started.

Thanks in advance!

So, you are saying you don’t have any spark on 3-4? I would see what the new pulse generator does for you.

Thanks so much for the reply.

Yes, no spark at all. I can get it to run roughly. When I pull either of the front plugs I can visibly see a very strong spark and it struggles to stay running. When I pull either of the rear plugs, nothing.

I would replace the pulse generators…seems to me there was one for each bank.

Possibly the pulse generator has moved too far to function? I think there are two bolts holding each one. 0.16” to 0.040” air gap for the 84 model which is the manual I have. You’ll find out when me pulse generator comes. Not much room with the radiator in there, but pull the covers and you could probably see each one. There is also a bracket which holds the wire loom against the motor which if loose would allow the wires to contact the belts or crank pulley.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

I bought PGs from Honda a couple of years ago for an 85, which has them on the front. They come as an assembly for both sides. There's no adjustment--tighten the mounting bolts, run the wires, and they're installed.
BTW, the signal for the tach comes off the trigger for the 1/2 coil, and the fuel pump relay trigger is off the 3/4 set. Have you noticed if either of those is flaky?

Unfortunate, or fortunate, I'm running the motor on a 76. This means it's not connected to either the fuel pump or tachometer. In fact, I just deleted the tach.

Installed new pulse generator. It did nothing.

Front two wires are firing, but rear two have no spark.

I tested each connection going to the coil and I get full voltage, 12/13 with ignition on, and 14 when running. Same with both coils.

Any ideas what to look for now?

Have you done the obvious? Replaced spark wires? Caps? Plugs? Made sure coil wires were getting power? Made sure no grounding issues with coil/pulser for 3/4?

Figured it out. One small bit of wiring went bad. I put in some new wire, and all cylinders are firing.

Where was the bad wire? Glad you found the issue, but also sorry you had to throw some parts at it.

This wire was coming out of the black box(cdi) and feeds into the left coil.

When I converted the 1000 to use the 1200 black box I had to rewrite the coils.
