'78 GL1000 Front Brake Pad Spring Placement

'78 GL1000 Front Brake Pad Spring Placement

Does anybody have a pic of the front brake pad springs installation on a '78 GL1000 they can post? They're very similar to my '75, but different; the Clymers manual I have just shows how to install them with the caliper/piston housing apart(like my '75), which my '78 does not do, plus the springs are slightly different.

Yes, it's a very nice manual - I downloaded it and saved it - I'll see if that helps. Praying I don't need yet Another kind of spring pad. Will a '75 work in a '78? They're very similar.

Did you sort the piston/caliper issue out? If you have/had a solution the post update may help others with the same issue.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

Not yet - Life has been getting in the way, but I'm hoping to try to pay some attention to it today...seeing as those pad springs are hard to find, I may have to sacrifice one and see if I can't get a machinist friend of mine to cut out some more for me. The hard part is making the proper bends.

All I need is a pic of the spring pad IN the caliper, to see if the ones I have for the '75 will fit; leave it to Honda to change parts Just enough to make you buy another. Let me guess: for each year of the Honda GL1000 series, they used a different spring pad...wouldn't surprise me...

I believe the springs are different and not interchangeable.
1983 GL1100A Aspencade
1977 GL1000
1978 GL1000
1979 GL1000

Here are the models that use that part so you can look at other bike options off EBay; if no one has a replacement available.

Yup, that's the part number...and every place I've checked it's "Unavailable". I've reached out to a machinist friend of mine to see if we can come up with a solution.

Fair enough - here are the ones for the '75 GL1000 - the OEM one is on the left, the ones I had made on the right -

Now here's the one for the '78 GL1000...pretty much the same, BUT note the big - uh - 'appendage' in the middle that is noticeably Absent in the '75 version - as well as the side tangs...

The caliper for both of these springs are grooved differently to accept the different springs, unfortunately; AND they are different dimensions.

Flyin900, while I appreciate the Ebay tip (which I May buy!), I'm currently trying to get my machinist to cut me out a bunch of the '78's on a CNC machine. There's your differences. And everywhere I've looked (besides that Ebay listing, of course) they are "Unavailable." If I have a bunch cut out - and can bend the tang properly - I'll have way more than I can use and put them up for sale here in the For Sale section.
