Original cooling system hardware ?'s
Prepping my cooling system to reinstall on my 75 GL1000 and here to pick your brains. I've already used the search bar and found the workaround for those 30ish $ Denso fan motor bushings, but have ?'s pertaining to my hoses, clamps, and wire guards. I'd like to stay with the original clamps and guards if possible, but would like to give them a coat or so of what color paint? My guess is it was originally a zinc coating maybe? As for hoses I think I will go with a quality silicone application. Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks in advance

Go with a gun metal gray enamel paint if you want something other than black. I generally prefer an epoxy paint due to its durability, but custom colours are not always possible.

Re: Original cooling system hardware ?'s
I usually don't reinstall the springs around the hoses, but when I do, I usually use VHT Epoxy spray gloss black paint or single stage jet black urethane paint from www.TheCoatingStore.com . Both look close to the original paint black but the urethane paint is very durable. When painting the springs, I stretch them out and use a couple of nails on a piece of wood to keep them spread. You can get new hoses from www.Saber-Cycle.com that will fit correctly. I prefer getting these hoses instead of cutting a Gates hose in half, which is what a lot of people do.
Here is a question that is sure to generate some discussion. Why did Honda install the springs around the hoses? The hoses are not in danger of collapsing, but that may be why they used them, I don't know. You could make a case for protecting the bottom hose from rocks, etc but I don't think that is the reason either. I think one reason could be to help cool the antifreeze, but I don't know. I can say for sure the motorcycle does just fine without them.

With hoses, springs are normally used internally to prevent collapse and externally to protect from debris puncture and cuts. I don't run them because I think that they're a pain to deal with. I've had good results with DupliColor Wheel Coating. Tough stuff and readily available at parts stores.

Re: Original cooling system hardware ?'s
Mine hasn't had the springs in at least 15 years, maybe 20. And I used to take it on a lot of dirt/gravel when I commuted on it.
I don't know about silicone hoses. I have always cut the hoses for mine from car rad hoses that have the correct bend (I have the number written down in a book). The last time I checked that cost 1/5 the price of the originals and works perfectly well.
BTW: Those aren't the original clamps. The originals were a sort of bent wire affair, one of those "lowest bidder" things. Instead of painting those do yourself a favour and replace them with quality stainless ones.

Got it backwards. The 1000 ran the clamps pictured in '75, '76 and '77. I think they switched to the wire versions in '78, but definitely had by the time the 1100 rolled around (and continued to use them through the GL1200). And I only know this because I just had to do this same song and dance on my '76.Sidecar Bob wrote: ↑Tue Oct 26, 2021 10:15 am

The old style clamps (the ones pictured) actually won't work with the NAPA or Gates hoses- the OD is a bit larger than stock, enough to interfere with proper operation. I ended up switching to the double wire type, which aren't bad actually- they open up a bit more, and you can tighten them down a bit more as well, without worrying about that small flap that slides under the opposite side of the clamp binding and kinking up (what happened to me).
That said, a modern stainless hose clamp will work perfectly well, every time.
Last I checked Old Fogey sold direct replacement silicone hoses, but if you're US based you'll have to import them. But they are available.

Re: Original cooling system hardware ?'s
My '77 came with the crappy wire hose clamps. But I didn't get it until '93 so it is possible that someone replaced the originals with them.
I can't imagine why anyone would do that even if they used non-original hoses because much better clamps are available at any auto parts or hardware store.
