75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
I'm working on servicing the ujoint on my 75 GL1000. I don't think anyone has ever gone in there to grease it. This is a fairly low mileage bike - about 30k. I took the wheel off and disconnected the final drive and swingarm. I took the rubber boot of and have had a very difficult time getting the circlip off. I've broken two different circlip pliers trying to get it off (the little tang broke). The circlip moves around so it's not rusted in place. I'm a little concerned that once I get it off it'll be difficult to get back on but from experience it's much easier to put circlips back on than off.
I was hoping to get some helpful tips on how to get it off? Is it possible to somehow grease the engine output shaft and ujoint without separating them (I don't think so)?
What is the general consensus on what to use for greasing the ujoint? The manual says Multipurpose Grease NLGI #2 (MoS2 Additive).

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
The ujoint, itself, is not greaseable. No provision to attach a lubricating device to in there.Prospect wrote: ↑Wed Nov 03, 2021 10:16 pm I'm working on servicing the ujoint on my 75 GL1000. Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
Yes. On the opposite end of the driveshaft, the female splined coupler and its complementing male spline coupling on the final drive input shaft requires lubrication, too.
The 1975 swingarm did not have a zerk fitting installed near the swingarm to final drive coupling flange to allow grease to be forced into that sliding spline connection. Pack the female splined coupler full of the recommended grease before reassembling the swingarm and final drive assembly.

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
That is a difficult area to get a set of C clip pliers into as you have noted. I custom ground/bent a set to get in there and remove the clip. If you end up damaging it, they were still available from Honda in a 20mm size I think.
I use the Honda Moly 77 paste again available from the dealership for the splines. It was designed with 77% Moly paste for the big Wings and Valkyrie bikes rear sections.

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
There is someone here (badorderbob??)who had some very high mileage GL’s who would remove the shaft, submerge it 90 weight (I think), then put it in a vacuum sealed bag. He felt the vacuum would draw the air slowly out and the grease would take its place. He did it in the off-season.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
we (someone) needs to come up with a way to replace the u-joints. has anyone ever done that with the u joint from a freightliner to see if it handles the rpm?

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
having three joints in the house that I had play, however, by hand maneuvering them you could hear click clicks, we looked for a way to repair them and after several searches we found a company that works for Ferrari prototypes. we delivered, they had no problems replacing the joint, closing and balancing the shaft, the problem was the cost because this workshop, working for Ferrari, has very high labor costs and if I remember correctly, we have spent 230 or 250 euros. Shortly after the joint of the LTD, which has 113,000 km, it started to make some noise above all in gear changes and we decided to replace the rebuilt one. I only did 300 km but it looks like another motorcycle, much smoother and quieter.

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
Success. I used my best circlip pliers and it came off easily. Greased it all up. There is very little play in the u-joint. Thanks for all the help!

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
BTW: National Lubricating Grease Institute #2 refers to any grease with a consistency like peanut butter so "Multipurpose Grease NLGI #2 (MoS2 Additive)" means ordinary Moly-Lith grease. This grease is suitable for everywhere on the bike except places like the brakes that should have silicone grease.

Re: 75' GL1000 U-joint maintenance
This is the stuff I bought. It should last me a lifetime. I'm really glad I took the time to take everything appart and did it properly. I don't like riding and worrying about a job that I rushed.

That grease is the correct consistency but doesn't have either the lithium base or the molybdenum additive that you need.
