Frame number GL1 vs GL2

#1

Post by resenok »

After buying the GL1000, I asked why the frame number starts with GL2 and what the year of production could be. The first registration in Germany was in 1981. So many unanswered questions until today. I bought a parts catalog for GL1000K3 and GL1000z and found the answer so I will share with you this information that may be useful to other GL1000 fans.

Greetings from Poland
Pawel

Czesc Pawel. Piekne zdjecia.

Can someone chime in with regards to some differences between the European models and US? I know in the SOHC bikes it was mostly the rear turn signal lights and brake lights that were different.

I’m vaguely recalling a longer rear fender on European models as well.
Whatever I suggest here should be given ample time for a moderator to delicately correct. I apologize in advance.

Yup, longer rear fender due to the larger licence plates (as compared to US models). I've also seen horns that are forwatd-facing and lack the chrome cover, but I have no idea if this was factory.

(I've kept an eye out on and off for a longer rear fender for my bike, just for fun. I think they look neat. Nothing cheap enough to pull the trigger on though.)
1997 Valkyrie- Light Cutomization, but Too Busy Riding
1980 KZ1300- Bike's Haunted
1976 GL1000 (Yellow)- It Runs (Poorly) and Doesn't Leak (Mostly)
1974 Velosolex 3800- Better Than Walking
1972 CB750- Broke the Chain And Ate the Motor
1969 CT90- The Most Fun You Can Have on 90ccs.
1965 CA77 Dream- Needs a Full Teardown, but Complete

All advice I give is only valid until an expert corrects me.

As far as I know, the differences between European models and US models are: lighting system, with the possibility of traveling even with the lights off, position light, which consists of a small bulb inside the front light positioned under the main bulb, and with independent manual operation, the tail light comes on with the position light. Obviously then normal low beam and high beam light (for France the bulbs were yellow) there is no parking light with stationary vehicle. American high handlebar only in the first models imported at the end of 1975 and beginning of 1976, then the "European" handlebar, I think code 53100-371-960, is mounted, which is slightly lower than the one visible on the Resenok GL. and finally long rear fender. A round taillight was fitted only for Germany. I don't think other differences.

Good info. Anyone know if cable lengths are shorter for Euro GL1000 handlebars?

I run "Euro bars" on my Hunley '78 with '75 motor. I have routed the clutch cable over the top of the air cleaner on that side to take up the slack for it. So far, the throttle cables have not posed a problem.
