'78 Paint Question

#1

Post by tomk1960 »

I was wondering if anyone has found a good match for the "Candy Limited Maroon" that was used in 78 and 79? Perhaps House of Kolor has something that works? I might have my bodywork repainted over the winter and if my painter can avoid having to reinvent the wheel to come up with a match, that would be great.

Thanks.

If no one has an option then a body shop supply house usually has an optical scanner, if you have a decent painted panel to scan. It will match and formulate something very accurate.
On my 1981 GL1100 I had the shelter scanned and a paint formulated for it and I actually blended it into the existing paint. Unless you are a critical paint expert, no one can tell where I blew in the panels with the new paint.
Current Bikes:

1966 CL77 - Honda 305cc - Dual purpose - "Gentleman's Scrambler" was a period moniker.
1967 CL175K0 - Low production number with #802 engine serial- winter 2019/2020 full restoration.
1972 CB350F - Baby Four with low mileage - Cosmetic refresh to the next level 2021/2022.
1978 CB550K - Very original bike with only 7499 Km. from new - light cleanup and refresh done.
1983 CB1100F - Canadian model - DOHC Supersport in pristine low kilometre condition from new.
1984 GL1200 - Standard model in showroom condition - two owner bike from new.
1984 CX650E - Restored summer 2017 - a rare Eurosport model - excellent one owner bike.

I used their Geneva Green on my '76 Yamaha RD400c and it seems a perfect match to the original. Only 1/2 pint was more than enough. This is a water borne paint and MUST BE CLEAR COATED. In fact, it look awful until the clear, then the metallic and color pop. Sprays like a lacquer. Shipping costs as much as the paint, but the total still isn't bad.

I'm not sure how easy it is to match with a scanner since there's usually a metallic base coat and then several coats of the candy. Unlike a solid color, candies take several coats to achieve the desired shade, so getting a good match with a scanner can be difficult. My painter will do a scan, then experiment on a sample piece to get the coat count right for the color.

This is good to know - I'll tell him about this option. All of the pieces will be repainted, so a perfect match to original isn't necessary - something close will be great since the bike is somewhat modified anyway.

Thank you both for the suggestions!

As a follow up to my response. The GL1100 was a metal flake dark blue/black colour from the factory. I don't believe Honda was doing the really multistage paints of the 60's and early 70's on the same level. I blew in and matched the panels on sections of the shelter and it would take a really experience painter to see the blend.

I suggest you look at both options, as I bought my paint for about $50.00 from the body supply place and have lots left. It was a custom mixed pint of paint that I used a minimal amount. Definitely enough to shoot the few panels on a Wing.

I refinished a tank from a 71 CB500 that was candy green from the factory. It was actually candy blue over a gold basecoat... No wonder there were never actual Honda paint codes from those days. Silver basecoat: blue. Gold basecoat: green.
