Contact the vendor. They can and do make mistakes and usually are eager to reverse them. I bought a full set of RD400c tank and sidecover decals from a vendor (often such things are printed when ordered). Thry arrived with two different shades of one of the accent colors. The vendor discovered that they had been printed from the wrong file. Sent me a whole new set. Your vendor may have printed on matt material by mistake.

When you shoot clear coat over it you will have a gloss finish. I used the same decal from the same supplier and it looks fine once clear coated. Leaving the decal not clear coated could be a problem over time, as it will likely lift and discolour if not protected. The original Honda one was covered in clear coat.

Would the matte decal provide better adhesion for the clear?

I don't believe so, as many other graphics I have installed on various body panels are a gloss finish with no issues on adhesion.

To the original Bloodhound comment at the start of the thread. When you read the Reproduction Decals website description on this decal it states " printed on a material that has a brushed aluminum finish" That would indicate it isn't a gloss finish on the decal. :orange

I am dealing with a gas tank where the PO shot clear coat on the painted finish and then applied the decals and didn't reshoot clear over them. The white pin stripe has started to yellow in a few areas and where the pin stripe joints are there is some lifting too.
Depending on what your looking for overall, it is advised to shoot a protective clear coat finish over any graphics or decals for long term durability.

If your reasonably competent with rattle can paints, then there are 2K gloss clear coat cans available with the hardener canister inside the bottom of the can. This product shoots well from a rattle can, as it seems to have an improved paint valve assy and it is then gas resistant when cured.

Well I know what a brushed finish is and it definitely isn't brushed , this is more stippled and dull .cheers

Well that sounds like a printing issue for sure. Mine was a flat brushed finish as indicated, although this was 4 years ago that I restored the bike.
I have tried to contact them in the past about their vintage keys that they show available and received no response, so hopefully your more successful.
They are part of a much larger operation called Diablo Cycle which also has a website, yet no mention of Honda decals on that site which is strange.
