GL1000 Fast idle link

#1

Post by Prospect »

I rebuilt the carburetor sometime ago and finally got to installing them yesterday. After installation I noticed that the fast idling was hanging down loose. I managed to put it in the proper orientation without removing carbs. It took a long while. However, I don't think the fast idle link mechanism is advancing far enough. I don't think that spring is doing its job or something is off. I made a little video as a reference.

Here's two photos I had taken last year before disassembling my '76 set of GL1000 carburetors.
In your video I noted the fine wire torsion spring's hooked end is installed so it is pushing the fast idle lever, clockwise. Backwards if you will.
You already know how difficult it was to reposition the lever. At this point, It is easier to pull the complete "rack" back off the engine to completely remove the lever in order to flip the fine wire torsion spring, over, on the pivot shaft. Maybe you can do the dis- and reassemble on the engine? I wouldn't be able to!
Then wrap the fine wire torsion spring one time counterclockwise under the fast idle lever in order to anchor the closed loop end of the spring onto the post, located at 1 o'clock to lever's pivot shaft. Clear as mud?

edit: flyin900 has posted some very good details photos in the next post down, too!

Here's a couple of shots that may also help you in the orientation.

I noted in your video the carburetors are 1975 spec. units. Those particular throttle linkage rods are 1 year only components.
Old Fogey has an article on his website ( Wingovations ) about reducing the amount of lost motion in their pivot ends that can affect the steadily consistent engine idle speed synchronization of the 4 carburetors.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like the spring is hooked into the wrong part of the shaft. It took me about 90 minutes to get that in place. There is no room to manoeuvre at all. It looks like I'll have to do it again. It seems like I've had to do several jobs twice already on this bike. Oh well.

Well the good thing is you get good at pulling the carbs after a few tries and we have all been there. :-D

The good news is that I started the bike up today. It hasn't been on the road since the early 90's so it had white exhaust for about 60 seconds. It idled beautifully and throttle response was instant with no hesitation. It was slow to return to idle but I need to do some cable adjustments and syncing etc. The starter was slow to turn initially but I think that's because of a corroded ground cable at the frame.

Some of the stuff I did included, timing belts, carb rebuild (Randakk's kit), fork oil, tires, rear brake rebuild (in progress), U-joint and final drive lube (have to redo), coolant change, coolant cross tube o-ring and gasket change, oil change, swingarm lube, spark plugs and caps, air filter. Plus installed a complete -new to me- stock exhaust system that had the exhaust clamps welded to the exhaust!

If I'm forgetting something critical please advise. I was going to do the head bearings and wheel bearings but I checked them out and seem fine.

Its always great to bring a bike back from the dead but I wont be able to take it for a spin any time soon.

Great job ! Good looking bike ! We’ve all been through this with having to redo things. One thing to Keep your eye’s open for is the rear grab rail, they are difficult to find and generally expensive but just be patient. They are special bikes, very different. Good job !

The slow to return to idle speed will be fixed with a good carb sync and if the “fast idle” is either too fast or slow you can bend the tab that contacts the throttle cable pulley/cam a little bit either way to get what you want, a small amount is all that’s needed. Also before syncing things, make sure you have set the valve lash, preferably a little loose at .005-.006in. My 76 ltd must’ve had corrosion on the valves and seats as the lash closed up to zero after sitting for about 20yrs and had to be reset several times over The next several hundred miles, need to always recheck the carb sync as well.

Thanks for the tip on the fast idle issue.

I forgot to mention I did do the valve lash just before the timing belts. The rear grab rail I was able to find a while back but haven't installed as I'm considering putting on full vetter bags and a windjammer. If you look at the pic there are several holes and what look like a welded plate near the tail section. Probable made for a luggage rack.

Often times a luggage rack and grab rail do not get along too well. Sometimes best to use just one or the other. Save the grab rail as they are exceeding rare and you may want to return to stock at some point.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I got the fast idle link sorted out. It only took 30 minutes of fiddling in a tight space this time.
