after market exhaust question
I'm currently running the stock exhaust on my 82 1100. A friend of mine scored a NIB set of Jardine pipes and I really like the sound.
it isn't loud and obnoxious but has a nice throaty sound to it.
Is there an after market exhaust for these old girls that will give me a nice sound that won't require ear plugs to ride?

Re: after market exhaust question
I can't speak for the 1100, but my very first 1000 came with the very-popular Harley (Sporster, I think) slip ons. They give a real nice lower rumble on idle, and gives a nice aggressive edge while cruising, without being too loud. The only reason I ditched mine was because I wanted something a bit more stock.
Again, this is a 1000, not a 1100, but this is probably the best representation I've found of what the sound ends up being.

Re: after market exhaust question
the problem with the 1100 exhaust is it is one piece from the header on down. I cut the mufflers off and had an adapter welded on to fit the HD mufflers. Alternatively you could score a set of headers off a 1200 and put the HD mufflers on those.
1978GL1000 naked - kinda sadly gone. no bike at the moment.

This is my 81 1100 with ultra glide mufflers. Not the best video.

Re: after market exhaust question
On my GL100 I found the Jardines to be too loud. I used muffler stainless steel wool (not the kind found in Brillo, etc.) to quiet them.

Re: after market exhaust question
ooo, thanks for the tip. My 1100 currently has Jardines, but I like the HD sound better and have a spare set in the garage. Now to see of 1200 headers are expensive.

Re: after market exhaust question
You might check out MAC for their head pipes, I have them on my 76 1000 and am quite pleased with them because they actually have the full size pipes go into a real collector, unlike the terrible factory head pipes, just terrible !
They actually seemed to improve the performance quite a bit, but the butt dyno lies. I replaced the oe pipes because they had rusted out the inner pipe and had come loose. I’ll add a disclaimer here as the new pipes may be Jardines but I think they are MAC’s but it’s been a really long time ago. Also I believe 1000 head pipes should bolt right on an 1100 or 1200. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I have MAC head pipes on my 76. I've looked again for them online in anticipation of doing the harley swap but can't find them anymore.redglbx wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 9:58 am You might check out MAC for their head pipes, I have them on my 76 1000 and am quite pleased with them because they actually have the full size pipes go into a real collector, unlike the terrible factory head pipes, just terrible !

Re: after market exhaust question
There’s not not much difference really. Maybe a little louder and slightly throatier? But they look way better in my opinion
There is this option for loud

Another vote for the Sportster mufflers. To me, the best part about them is how good they sound at idle. Here’s a short clip of mine idling:

Re: after market exhaust question
Sounds nice. I really like the sportster slip ons that I put on my 78, throaty but not irritating. My buddy has an 1100 that has Jardines and he is thinking of changing out the headers and switching to sporty mufflers.desertrefugee wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 9:33 pm Another vote for the Sportster mufflers. There is a pretty good write up in the how to section by Roady. I think there is even a sound clip.
