Exhaust gasket / crush washer
Morning
I’ve had these a while and finally went to put them on this morning, but they seem really thick (having trouble getting enough thread to get the nuts to bite. Is this normal thickness ? I’m assuming they need to be crushed as I tighten but I’m second guessing now.

Also, I can’t tell if any prep is needed here - I thought last time I had those out I saw some thin steel washers in there - ?

Get a good sharp pick and make sure that no old ones are in there. Have found some stacked 2 or 3 deep in there and that is why there is not enough threads to get the nuts started

Also after installing the new ones don't try to over tighten them to crush the new gaskets. You should be able to tell when the nuts are good and snug. By over tightening you take the chance of breaking the stud. Ride the bike a couple of times and recheck the nuts. Wise counsel on both points, but it’s easy to overlook old crush washers left in the port. Looks like there might even be one in the example you have pictured.

Use a pick or small screwdriver to pry it out. Be careful not to gouge the aluminum head.

You may also have one or two (or even more) aluminum gaskets in there. They were produced for it also.

note: There's only one gasket in this exhaust port photo prior to removing it. Make sure the drain hole passage is clear from top to bottom while you're at it, too. They can get plugged with trash.
