Junction box deletion ????

#1

Post by micalocus541 »

I currently have a 1979 gl1000, and at the moment I am having electrical problems I wanted to rid my self of useless wires an have found out that the whole junction box is falling apart... An my bike no longer runs, so my question is how do I get rid of the junction box, would a Nuetrino work to replace it, or what should I do??? I want it to be bare bones for a bobber build but I am still very new to motorcycles and the electrical.

I don't like diodes or black boxes with mystery functions - so I completely rewired my '75 and drew an accurate diagram of all the circuitry. Not really that hard if you start from scratch and not try to accommodate all the weird stuff Honda stuck in there.

i've done the same. Not that hard. Just do one circuit at a time. I'm doing the same to a 1200 right now myself. Just a hint....try and use the same color wire as the manual shows. might help you later. And draw a picture of the routing.

If I recall, some of the junctions at the box are just connectors allowing you to detach things, and so you just eliminate the plug and hard wire. And without being to look at mine, there may be some connectors that are main power coming in and branches going out. In any case look at the wiring diagrams and either do color coded drawings or TAKE pictures of what you do,

I agree that it isn't all that complex, but "I am still very new to motorcycles and the electrical." you risk having something that you may not recover from if you don't understand what you do. The box is really just a holder of a bunch of inter-connects. It has no active function. Falls apart because it is poorly constructed - not intended to have much structural integrity. Best to start with the wiring diagram and identify all of the connectors from the actual box to the diagram. Then determine the functions of each. There are some that seem superfluous (like the phase of the alternator that goes to the left handle bar controls connection) but are there for other countries.

The smoke is inside the wiring insulation and under no circumstance should you let the smoke escape. Keeping one terminal off the battery often helps with this issue.

After I unwrapped an entire harness and traced every wire by the diagram in the factory service manual, it all made perfect sense, except the loose ends in there for european bikes. I would suggest you start with factory wiring diagram ( I have found color differences in the Clymer books) and carefully trace each wire through your bike while cleaning all the connections. Yes, this is very time consuming, especially when you have to go learn what a component is first. The upside is your bike will work again, and you will never be afraid of wiring again. If you find issues that need repair, Vintage connections is the place to get parts, and yes the high dollar crimping tool is worth every penny...it just works.

You know the advantage of your work. Payment comes years later when the knowledge gains make repairs super fast.
