Dyna s 12v supply wire melted

#1

Post by kerryb »

I have been searching, but can't find success. 1977 gl1000, lower mileage, with Dyna s ingnition. I have the engine out out for other work and notice the insulation on the power supply to the Dyna module is damaged from heat. I saw a reference to this issue but not a cure or explanation.
Is this typical?
Is this OK?
Power to the module is 12v from the fusebox.
Engine ran fair before carb rebuild, haven't re- installed yet.
Comments or links to discussiom would be helpful.

If you are drawing enough current to melt insulation on that supply wire, then a couple of things could be suspect. The module itself might be problematic and drawing excessive current. Could also be poor connection/termination near the heat concentration. (I'd be looking at that first).

Thanks guys, no I havent a decent picture of the damage because its easier to to feel than see. I'm not familiar with Dyna s yet so I'm not moving anything. Discovered the Dyna when I tried to check the points to improve the spark. Damage is 2 inches from the unit. Can't seem to find decent installation instructions online. Randakks link leads to sales page at Dynatek.
I'll keep searching, I'm sure it's out there.

Thank you GLtriker, that is exactly what I needed. I was reading about different ballast resisters yesterday, but now I can look with renewed clarity at how it was put in originally. This installation has a 12v lead directly from the fuse box clipped behind a glass fuse end. Maybe I'll put some proper bullet connectors to the turn signal relay.

p.s. when I come to Baldwinsville to visit my uncle maybe I could buy you a cup of coffee sometime.

Family in B'ville, eh? Small world! Yes, we can work out a plan to visit when the Spring arrives again tumb2

Here's links to 2 separate Dynatek technical publications.
One that applies to GL1000 Dyna S installation .
https://www.mpsracing.com/instructions/ ... /DS1-3.pdf

The second to a GL1000 Dyna S troubleshooting guide.
https://www.mpsracing.com/instructions/ ... esting.pdf

Need any photos re: correct routing of the Dyna cable assembly from the Dyna S assembly, to the primary lead connectors under the rubber boot, let me know.

Insulation damaged 2 inches from the Dyna S might have been caused by an exhaust leak?

These photos may be helpful too . (Yes, two different Dyna S installs on my trike's engine. ;) )

Yup, exhaust leak has merit, the damage is on the outside of the lower curve, closest the the header.
