Horn recommendation - standard conversion

#1

Post by sphen »

Converting an 86 1200 to standard - I reinstalled the horns and tried a couple ways to tuck them behind the light shell, to no avail. They just ugly.

So is there a better place to mount them, or perhaps a smaller footprint horn to use? I could do snail horns - about the same size but maybe not as noticeable?

Stock GL1800 horns are loud! Don't look too bad, either. I put one on My RD400c because the stock Yamahorn was barely audible at speed.

So On the 1000 it mounts behind the radiator…hmmm.

Wondering if I could find somewhere back there to mount on mine - or just use one of the radiator grill bolts on the front

Not sure how much you'd have to massage it, but it may be worth looking into a Magna horn mount. They look rather similar to how the Standard 1200s are set up- essentially both horns are bolted to the middle and extend outward, rather, than inward.

Unless, of course, the goal is to hide them.

Mine is a comfortable compromise of hidden and functional.

So what I w done for the moment is mount them to the upper radiator grill bolts, and angled them out slightly so as not to block airflow. We’ll see..

At least it moves them behind the fork

I've always attached the horns to the frame below the front of the shelter. The current one would look better if I painted the mount black but otherwise it looks OK there (I have an oogah horn on the other side controlled by a separate button).

Yes Sidecar I was going to mention the same thing. This is my 83 Aspencade with the horn mounted in the same place (on side just below shelter) with a chrome cover. I like it. Hi tone one side low tone the other.

I used to have a high and a low too but eventually it evolved to what I have now.

I use the horn so seldom that I occasionally honk it when I'm not near anything else just to test it ;)

Take a look at the Piaa “Sport” dual slimline horn kit, it comes with a 400hz & 500hz horns and they are loud ! They are only around $55 if I remember right. I upgraded from the wimpy single barely audible one on my 14 fjr and on my 81 cbx to replace the dieing oe horns on it, very happy with the results, did I mention that they are loud.

Fairly easy to fit & hide.

Yep Bob I hear you. The horns I have are really so the bike passed its' safety inspection. The chrome covers are so they don't look like an afterthought :-D . I am of the opinion that it you really need a loud horn to avoid a bad situation that you might be better off concentrating on avoidance/defensive driving than trying to find the horn button but that is just my opinion. A horn on a bike has to be very loud to stop a driver in a cage with the windows up, radio on, drinking coffee and texting on a cell phone in his/her lap from taking my life or limb!

One of my mentors when I first got a bike told me about a time he took his wife's bike to go for a part he needed for his and a big truck started moving into his lane in front of him. Forgetting that she had an air horn, he tapped the button while applying the brakes to give the truck room. He said he had never sen a truck move sideways so fast ;)

But where I live I almost never drive in heavy traffic or on roads with more than 2 lanes so I seldom encounter drivers like that so most of my horn use is the friendly toot when I see someone I know type of thing and I'm more likely to use the oogah for that.

Been enjoying this thread. Thought I’d jump in at this point. I have a Wolo bad boy airhorn like those shown here on my Valkyrie. They are loud. But they are also clunky and difficult to mount and less you have a lot of real estate to work with… As with the Valkyrie.

But, you mentioned making them disappear to the extent you can. In my mind the absolute factory original horns used on the GL1000 do exactly that! While they don’t exactly disappear, the chrome dish blends in with the machine and doesn’t scream horn to the outside world. (I don’t recall if the 1200 still has those tabs on the frame.)
