I'll 3rd that.
Eccles (the CX650E/GL500 based sidecar outfit I drive in the winter) has been getting hard to start and the left cylinder has been cutting out intermittently. At first I thought it was due to stale fuel (a tank of gas lasts me way too long these days) and it did feel a bit better after I filled the tank last week but it didn't fix the problem.
I was starting to think it felt a bit like it did when a pulse generator (TI) failed a few years ago.
Then someone posted about a similar problem on cx500forum and it got me thinking so I warmed the garage up a bit and had a look. I unscrewed the connector (that's what NGK calls the part that clips onto the plug) from my left cap and everything inside it was pretty oxidized and the end of the connector that the resistor is supposed to press against had a depression burned into it.

The right cap looked OK but I figure it is best if they are both the same so I cleaned out both of them with Scotchbrite and contact cleaner. I probably could have cleaned & re-used all of the parts (I no longer advocate replacing the resistors with brass rod except as an emergency repair*) but I had a set of NGK caps in the shop that don't fit anything I have so I used the resistors, springs and connectors from them (these parts are used in a lot of NGK caps) to rebuild my caps .

When everything was back together I touched the Start button and it fired immediately. When I went out that afternoon it started more easily than it had in a long time and felt much happier than before so I gave it a bit of a run and it didn't cut out under any conditions.
Ironically, it only ran nicely for a couple of months, then it spat the baffle out of the left muffler and I installed a lollipop baffle to quiet it a bit until I start driving Mr.H. (I'm planning to replace most if the exhaust system this summer) but that's another story.

* If you do replace the resistors with a brass rod make sure you use resistor plugs, not only to reduce electrical interference but some resistance between the coil's secondary and the spark gap has a beneficial effect on the spark event's waveform (IIRC, it increases the duration of the spark).

Welp. Out with the motor. Picked up a stator, water pump, and water pump kit locally from saber cycle. I may have to go back for the rear cover gasket if my gasket kit doesnt have it.

I bought a replacement water pump as when I attempted to rock it left to right, it exhibited a minor amount of movement, and rocking it top to bottom showed a a bit more movement than it did left to right. Better safe than sorry...

I would caution about using Saber in house parts. Their Barracuda line has many times been identified as substandard.

*shrug* whatever, if it has issues i can take it out and go back and get a refund. when i joined here and started talking about the work i needed to do, i was hesitant to say where im getting parts as I am well aware of the bickering diane did with randall to where she got banned from here, and have had a coworker tell me what an asshat randall was when he met him in person. its an aftermarket part. if it fails im not going to be surprised. so far the barracude parts ive used, i have had no issues with.

I think it has been a long, long time since the whole Saber Cycle stuff went down. I'm always one for shopping local if I can. People tend to stay with the vendors that they have good luck with. As it was said "You can please some of the people, some of the time. But hard to please all the people , all the time".

This. But, some people can't let go of things. I've had good dealings with vendors considered marginal with the community, and had rough treatment by some of the favorites. Things change, employees rotate through and ownership moves on (remember how great HDL was when Hal owned it?) These days, I look for how each order is handled and product quality. I just last week received the wrong size SS tubing from a vendor. When shown the error, they refunded and still sent the correct size.

Welp, got the stator and water pump changed. BIG QUESTION THO -- Where does this fourth washer go??? I looked at several walkthroughs and couldnt find where it goes, nor did mine have it...I know this kit is for the 1000-1200, so I just wanna make sure I didnt miss anything haha.

Looking at the stator, one of the poles did look like it got hot, but really, none of it was that bad looking. Oh well.

Old water pump bearings were definitely crunchy from sitting.

Mech seal face was swollen like its been hot, and the weep hole was clogged. Looking at the cover, it seemed like it was leaking at one point before it clogged.

All thats left is to finish putting the cooling system back together and take it for a test ride. I have feeling the carbs will need to get rebuilt as it was popping really bad while riding / coasting. I checked the resistors in the boots and they were all spotless.

Probably a new sealing washer for the oil drain plug. Is it aluminum?

Hi,
I don't know if you finally solved your charging/heating problems.
I just noticed that mine is not properly charging, giving only a + 0.3 to 0.5V at iddle or 3000 rpm.
According to the randakk's procedure (https://www.randakksblog.com/comprehens ... eshooting/), stator seems to be good. Connectors are also good.
But rectifier gives 6 times 500+ ohms resistance with my old cheap digital multimeter...
As it was not within the 5-40 ohm values, I thought rectifier was bad. I found then a secondhand one. And guess what, the 6 resistances values are almost the same as with the former one.
I guess my next step will be to replace the old rectifier/regulator couple with a combined one...

Getting a MOFSET rectifier is a good idea. Nice to find one off a Honda CBX600 as the wires are the same color and the count is the same.
