Final driven gear noise

#1

Post by Chainman »

Hello all,
1975 GL1000
I noticed my mpg had dropped and suspected I was dragging the rear brake.
I pulled the rear pads and then heard noise in the final drive.
I tried to remedy by changing the gear oil, and cleaning and greasing the splines. It didn't seem to help.
Please have a listen to this and let me know what you think

Not all bad news, she's got new head gaskets and has never sounded better :-D

I'm learning it's one thing to get `em running and another to keep `em running lolol

Fixed your first post. Sounds like the rotor scraping on the brake housing to me. Can you see if that might be happening? Last time you had the wheel off are you certain the spacing tube was inside the final drive?

Thanks for fixing the post.
I am certain the spacer is between the bearings
The gear oil did look a little metalic. :(
I'll have a hopeful look at the rotor clearance and report back

Thank you

Removing the pads eliminates the rotor noise.
Maybe the bearings then; hopefully. This bike did sit for 33 years

Anyways, grateful for this forum

Yep, I’d replace the wheel bearings, but I’d bet you already knew that.

Loosen the 3 nuts that hold the final drive to the swingarm and back the axle nut off. If the noise changes (mine did) tighten the nuts and axle in the proper sequence. I heard the same noise on mine when I would push it around the garage. I think it comes from a slight mis alignment of the spline on the rear driven flange.

Note that the correct order is
1) axle nut (this will pull the splines into alignment)
2) swingarm pinch bolt (all models except GL1000)(if you do that first tightening the axle nut will pull the ends of the swingarm together)
3) final drive nuts
